The Gunners will turn the their attention to the Premier League following a defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich as they welcome Sunderland to the Emirates.

Preview: Gunners hoping to respond after disappointing European outing

Arsene Wenger’s men will consider themselves unlucky after losing out to defending European Champions Bayern Munich at the Emirates on Wednesday. The Gunners began the match brightly forcing Manuel Neuer in making some fine saves early in the match.

However an injury to left back Kieran Gibbs followed by a red card to goalkeeper Wojciech Szenczy turned the tide into Bayern’s favour who punished the North London side by scoring two goals. The match also saw record signing Mesut Ozil produce another disappointing performance in an Arsenal shirt.

Not only was the German seen misplacing many of his passes, the former Real Madrid man also missed an opportunity to put the Gunners in front after his weak penalty was saved by compatriot Manuel Neuer.

The German international has come under a lot of criticism since then and Arsene Wenger has hinted that his talismanic midfielder might be rested for the home fixture against Sunderland.

The Black Cats on the other hand have been very impressive under the tutelage of Gus Poyet having lost just twice in their last 16 matches in all competitions. They were unlucky to slip back into the relegation zone after their match against Man City was postponed due to adverse weather conditions and will now be hoping to put a strong performance against an Arsenal side contending for the title.

Arsenal’s French manager Arsene Wenger has praised the resilience Sunderland have put up in recent weeks and has claimed that his side will not take the fixture lightly.

“Sunderland play for survival,” Wenger said.

“They have a cup final coming and they will want to show they can play well so it could go both ways. That is not a reason for us to expect weakness from Sunderland. It can as well galvanise them and give them some special resources.

“Sunderland play quite well [in recent weeks], I must say. Poyet slowly has made an impact in their style of play and confidence level. The recent results show he has had a positive impact. It looks to me they are on a trend that is upwards.”

The Frenchman also heaped praise on former Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone who is poised to start against the Gunners for the first time since making his move to Sunderland.

“I kept him here after he had a trial at 16,” Wenger said. “That he makes a careerI am extremely happy for him. I had three young keepers here in Wojciech Szczesny, Lukasz Fabianski and Mannone and it was a nice problem. All three were top, top quality.”

Sunderland have made major strides in recent weeks. The Black Cats face Manchester City in the Capital One Cup Final on the 2nd of March after defeating Man United on penalties. Gus Poyet’s men have also secured qualification to the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup after defeating Southampton on Saturday and their recent form will surely give them confidence to produce a good performance against Arsenal.

Sunderland have incredibly won four of their last five matches in all competitions with their only defeat coming at the hands of Hull City in their last Premier League outing. They will be hoping to avoid a second consecutive defeat against an Arsenal side that they have not defeated away from home since 1983.

They will however be without first choice goalkeeper Keiren Westwood  who continues to nurse his shoulder injury whereas defender Carlos Cuellar is also recovering from his hip problem and will be unavailable for the match. Steven Fletcher on the other hand could return from an Achilles injury but Wes Brown will remain suspended for the tie.

Arsenal will continue to be without captain Thomas Vermaelen as well as midfielders Kim Kallstrom and Aaron Ramsey. Kieran Gibbs has also been sidelined after coming off during Arsenal’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
