A struggling AC Milan side will face this year’s surprise package Atletico Madrid as the two sides battle it out at the San Siro in a Champions League encounter.

Preview: Atleti poised to make the most out of Milan’s misery

The Rossoneri  have had a miserable start to their league campaign and are currently placed ninth in the league table, 31 points behind leaders Juventus. With the Serie A title well out of sight, Milan will try to make the most out of their European expeditions this season.

Despite their current form, Milan have proven to be a tough side to break down at the San Siro and even though Atletico have been enjoying a fine campaign they will find it difficult to beat the Italian side at their own backyard.

However what settles well for Diego Simeone and his side is the fact that Spanish teams have done relatively well at Milan’s home. Of the eight matches Milan have played against La Liga sides, they have only managed a single victory which came against Barcelona at this stage last season. Furthermore the Diavolo have lost the last four of their knockout ties against Spanish oppositions.

Amidst the fiasco Milan are currently in they will need their top players to step up if they want to gain anything out of the match. Mario Balotelli in particular will have to be at the top of his game if Milan are to achieve any sort of European success this season.

Atletico on the other hand are currently enjoying a fairy tale season. Los Colchoneros have given Milan every reason to be scared of with incredible performances both domestically as well as in Champions League matches. Atletico Madrid were one of the few sides which breezed through the group stages undefeated. Diego Simeone’s side lost just two points in the process and conceded just three goals.

They have been even more impressive in La Liga where they have given both Real Madrid and Barcelona a run for their money. Los Rojiblancos trail the two Spanish giants only on goal difference and have seemed persistence in their quest of becoming the only side to beat Real Madrid and Barcelona to the league title since the 2003-2004 season when Valencia lifted the trophy.

Diego Costa’s form has been integral to Atletico’s success so far and Diego Simeone will once again be depending on his star striker to produce the goods. The Brazilian born forward has scored 26 goals this season so far and has registered four in his last three European outings.

22 year old Koke has also been a revelation this season and even though his performances in European outings have not been that sparkling, the youngster has performed admirably in domestic competitions this season and Milan should be vary of the versatile midfielder.

The visitors will now need to keep the momentum going after returning to winnings ways with a 3-0 victory over Valladolid. Atleti had tasted defeat in three consecutive matches prior to their victory on Saturday.

Seedorf will have a depleted squad to choose from with as many as nine players on the unavailable list. Star forwards Robinho and Stephan El Shaarawy have failed to recover from injuries and will not be able to make it to the squad for the home fixture against Atletico. Daniele Bonera, Bryan Cristante, Urby Emanuelson and Valter Birsa will also remain on the sidelines.

Midfield duo Sulley Ali Muntari and Riccardo Montolivo will serve suspension, Keisuke Honda on the other hand is ineligible for the match having already represented CSKA Moscow in this season’s Champions League.

Diego Simeone will also be without the services of key men with both Filipe Luis and Tiago ruled out of the match. 19 year old Javier Manquillo has also been ruled out of the match and will play no part during Wednesday’s fixture.

The Spanish side will definitely carry the favourites tag to San Siro having won five of their last six matches in the Champions League and having scored at least two goals in those five matches.
