Freiburg is no longer the outfit they were last season; Christian Streich’s overachievers are now languishing in fifteenth but has indeed achieved something this season which only one other German side has achieved.

Preview: Will Distractions get in Bayern’s Way?

It is best to start with team news first. Vaclav Pilar, Marco Terrazzino, Vegar Hedenstad and Sebastian Freis are out for Freiburg. Mario Mandzukic is suspended for Bayern while Franck Ribery is out injured. Holger Badstuber is currently in rehab of course.

Freiburg is the only side aside from Leverkusen to take off points from Bayern this season in the Bundesliga. They needed a late goal, four minutes from the end of normal time to be precise, to take a 1-1 draw against a lethargic Bayern inn August. Lethargy however should not be a problem this time. The problem though could be an entirely different one.

With Arsenal looming on the horizon, Pep Guardiola might choose to rest many of his stars. He had actually done so in the 1-1 draw and had paid the price as a result. Guardiola has thus constantly emphasized the need to pay attention to this fixture and this fixture only until Sunday arrives. This is what the Spaniard had to say according to Bayern’s official website:

“We only ever concentrate on the next match. We’re in a good position, but we still have lots of running ahead of us.

We have to keep focus. The next match is always the most important. We’ll concentrate on the Champions League as of Sunday.”

Guardiola’s press interviews might have a rather monotonic tone to them; however, his counterpart, Christian Streich is anything but mundane. Despite overseeing a mass exodus of players in the summer, Streich has stuck to his guns well. This is what he had to say as noted by Bayern’s official website in response to Freiburg’s dismal (winless) record in Munich:

“I’m not interested in statistics. The longer a streak lasts, the higher the probability it’ll come to an end.”
