Fifth placed Tottenham Hotspur takes on ninth placed Newcastle United in an attempt to further prove that they are truly now a contender for the UEFA Champions League spots, if not for the Premier League crown itself.

Preview: Can Tim Sherwood guide Spurs to a top four spot?

At one point under Andre Villas Boas, it had seemed Spurs had ventured too far and made too many mistakes to battle for the Premier League title. In terms of managerial experience as head coach, Tim Sherwood is a relative novice compared to Villas Boas. Thus watching Spurs beat Everton might have been surreal for some; it left Spurs three points behind Liverpool and just ten behind the league leaders.

Newcastle is coming into this one in poor form, having collected a solitary point in the past three matches. They have lost two matches back to back, at home to Sunderland and away to Chelsea. Tottenham had drawn 1-1 against Hull and had been battered 1-5 in front of their own fans by Manchester City before claiming all three points against Roberto Martinez’s men at the weekend.

One would expect that coming into this match, Tim Sherwood would be quite cheerful. However, comments by Ajax boss Frank de Boer regarding the Spurs managerial spot has rather upset him. This is what he had to say according to Sky Sports:

"It's natural I suppose, it's a big job, but I don't think I would ever tout myself about for a job when someone was already in the hot seat.

But if they want to do that, that's up to them. I don't know Frank. I'm not sure. I'm relaxed about it. But it wouldn't be something I would be doing.

They just want to put themselves in the frame. Obviously they are not happy with the jobs they are doing if they are touting themselves for the Tottenham job."

Newcastle will be without Ryan Taylor, Mathew Debuchy, Cheik Tiote, Gael Bigirmana, Fabricio Coloccini and the suspended Loic Remy. Yoann Gouffran, Gabriel Obertan and Papiss Cisse are all doubtful. Spurs will be without Sandro, Erik Lamela and Vlad Chiriches.
