Fifth and sixth in the Barclays Premier League respectively, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur will be fighting for a vital three points, especially in order to distance themselves from each other.

Preview: Can Everton manage to edge closer to Europe?

By manipulating the system of loans and playing a very attractive style, Everton has flourished under Roberto Martinez. Martinez has turned Everton from David Moyes’ low budget project into a genuine contender for the crown itself, let alone a European spot. The line between contender and pretender is quite thin in this campaign filled with surprises nonetheless and Everton must prove their mettle against Tim Sherwood’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham of course was not playing the part of a contender at all until Sherwood took to gliding up and down the touchline every match day. Spurs have played freely and positively and reaped the rewards, none more so than Emmanuel Adebayor who is beginning to resemble the deadly striker Arsenal once knew. A rift between him and former boss Andre Villas Boas had left him rotting away; he reflected this week on that relationship according to BBC:

"I told him: 'Your ideas will not help the team'.

I have had a chance to play for a lot of top clubs in my career and I know how it's supposed to be. I told him one v one and he didn't want to listen, and then I told him in front of the group.

Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe it was a good one, maybe it was a bad one. I don't know, but I spoke my mind."

Meanwhile, the man who will perhaps be standing tall between him and the goal reflected on his new boss Martinez. This is what Tim Howard had to say as noted by Sky Sports:

“The manager keeps us bright and bubbly and focused on ourselves. Not always having to look over your shoulder at who is coming next is good.

We work on ourselves and it's a difference. The manager will have some specific areas in which he thinks Tottenham are weak, or Sunderland, Crystal Palace or whoever are weak.

We'll train on trying to exploit them, as opposed to 'Here is what they are going to do to hurt us and this is what we are going to do to defend against them'. That is not in the manager's nature.”

The question now is: who can stay in touch with the top four? This encounter should be a really entertaining one regardless of who wins and definitely worth a watch.
