Napoli will play host to a resurgent Milan side at the Stadio San Paolo in a Serie A encounter as they hope to close down the gap between themselves and the top two.

Preview: Benitez and co looking to respond after a disappointing week

The Partenopei have lost both of their last two matches and will be hoping for a positive response as they aim on closing down the six point gap between themselves and second placed Roma. Roma got the better of Benitez’s side last time out as they gunned down Gli Azzurri 3-2 courtesy of a late goal from new signing Gervinho.

Napoli are now left with a slender disadvantage as they will hoping to turn around the deficit in their favour in the second leg, but despite the defeat Benitez remained optimistic and spoke of the positives from the match.

"The match was spectacular and all supporters must have been glad to see the game. The positive side is we scored two goals, and the reaction of the team after the defeat in Bergamo, but it's not positive to go two goals down in the first half," said the Spaniard.

"This Napoli is a new team with many new players and to be doing so well is impressive, in my view. I believe we are on the right path to grow."

Napoli did not have the best of their days in their last Serie A encounter either. The Partenopei were subjected to their worst defeat of the season as 12th placed Atlanta scored a 3-0 victory over Benitez’s side last week. Napoli now have Fiorentina breathing on their necks with only three points separating the two sides and a defeat for the Ciucciarelli  could see them going down to the fourth spot.

Napoli however have been relatively strong at home only losing once in their last 21 league matches at the Stadio San Paolo. Furthermore the Partenopei will have history on their side when they take field on Saturday having not lost against Milan in their last five meetings and will be hoping to put an end to Clarence Seedorf’s mini renaissance.

The Dutchman on the other hand will be hoping to maintain his unbeaten streak in the league having not lost a match in Serie A since taking charge of the club. Under their new manager the Rossoneri  have picked up seven points from a possible nine, but have a mountain to climb if they are to land a European qualification spot which at the moment is at a 12 point difference.

Last time the two sides met in this fixture, the match ended 2-2 at Naples with Stephan El Shaarawy inspiring an impressive comeback for Milan as they came back from two goals down to draw the match. The 21 year old however will not be able to take part in tonight’s encounter as he continues to nurse a foot injury. Mario Balotelli will however be available for selection after serving suspension in the match against Torino and is expected to start. Kaka on the other hand has been declared a doubt as he fights against an illness.

Napoli on could welcome back Valon Behrami who has recovered from a foot operation.
