In a fixture which never fails to entertain, Liverpool host Everton in a Premier League encounter at Anfield on the 28th of January.

Preview: Both managers looking for first Merseyside derby victory

The last three meetings between the two sides finished in a draw including the 3-3 thriller earlier in the season at Goodison Park. This implies that neither Brendan Rodgers nor Roberto Martinez have recorded a victory in the local derby as yet.

Only a single point separates the two sides as Liverpool enjoy a slender advantage over their counterparts but a defeat could allow the Toffees to overtake their counterparts and occupy the fourth spot.

Steven Gerrard who has been a regular participant in the Merseyside derbies highlighted the importance of a victory to fans of the respective club and also pointed out how a loss can be very crushing for the losing side in a heated derby.

“Losing at Anfield is the opposite to winning at Goodison,” Gerrard told reporters.

“It’s a complete nightmare. It’s difficult to put into words that feeling. If you lose a big game at Anfield it hurts for a few days but you have to move on, but losing to Everton at Anfield? That hurts for a long time.”

“People are talking about six points but for me it’s bigger than that. If either of the sides win this game, it’s a huge springboard for the rest of the season as far as confidence and belief is concerned.

“You don’t need to build these derbies up. They’re so big anyway. But when you’re so close in the league, they’re even bigger, and it adds an extra edge to the game.

Liverpool are unbeaten against their arch rivals in their last seven games in all competitions. Last time Everton recorded a win at Anfield was back in 1999 when the then youthful Steven Gerrard was sent off for a foul on Kevin Campbell with the Toffees then going ahead to win the match.

Liverpool have made a strong start to the new year under Brendan Rodgers having won four of their five matches. In their last outing the Reds recorded a 2-0 win over Bournemouth to advance to the fifth round of the FA cup.

Daniel Sturridge has been very instrumental since his return from injury earlier in the month and has scored in each of his last four games. Luis Suarez has not scored in his last two games for Liverpool but is still the league’s top scorer with a margin. The Uruguayan has scored 22 goals in the league so far which includes one against Everton in the reverse fixture. The 27 year old has scored in three of the four Merseyside derbies he has played in and along with Sturridge will be Liverpool’s player to lookout for.

Liverpool have been very strong at home this season and their only loss at the Anfield came at the hands of Southampton back in September.

Everton on the other hand have been equally impressive under new manager Roberto Martinez. Under his reign the Toffees have suffered just two Premier League defeats. Their away record has been exceptional so far and their only defeat on the road came at the hands of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Martinez’s side also have the best defensive record in away games having conceded just 11 goals in 11 away matches.

Everton qualified to the fifth round of the FA cup with a 4-0 win over Stevenage. Despite the impressive win Everton lost full back Bryan Oviedo who was a recipient of a horrific challenge as a result of which the Costa Rica international is expected to miss the World Cup.

Raheem Sterling and Simon Mignolet are expected to return to the starting line-up after being rested in the FA Cup tie. Jon Flanagan is likely to fill in at right back for Glen Johnson who has been ruled out by Rodgers for an indefinite period. Joe Allen could also make a return to the squad but Lucas Leiva (knee), Jose Enrique (knee),Daniel Agger (calf) and Mamadou Sakho (hamstring) are all expected to miss the match.

Everton’s loan signing Lacina Traore could feature for the Blues for the first time tonight, however there are doubts over flamboyant full back Seamus Coleman as well as winger Steven Pienaar who missed the trip to Stevenage.

Ross Barkley (broken toe), Darron Gibson and Arouna Kone (both knee) are definitely out of the tie but Antolin Alcaraz (muscle fatigue) and Gerard Deulofeu (hamstring) could be in contention to make it to the squad.
