Manchester United will be hoping to turn things around when they make a visit to Villa Park where they face Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa on Sunday.

Preview: Man United hopeful of avoiding third consecutive defeat in the league

David Moyes will be hopeful of avoiding a third consecutive loss for United in the league, if he fails in doing so it will only be the first time since 2001 the Red Devils drop all three points in three successive matches.

And Moyes will surely have his work cut out with last season’s top scorer Robin Van Persie ruled out for a month with a thigh strain. The 30 year old scored a hat-trick last time the two sides met and he will be sorely missed when the two sides meet at Villa Park.

The Dutch international missed four matches before making a return in last week’s defeat at the hands of Newcastle and also featured in the midweek victory against Shakhtar but suffered a thigh injury while creating an assist for Phil Jones from a corner, in the only goal of the match.

As a result of which Van Persie will miss a busy month of December, however United will be glad they do not face a top ten side till the first of January when they face Tottenham Hotspur.

“Robin has picked up a thigh strain and will be out for a month," Moyes told reporters.

"He took the corner we scored the goal from against Shakhtar and felt his thigh.

"So we're going to lose Robin, it looks like, for a month, with a thigh strain."

The Scot also insisted his desire to return to winning ways and end United’s disastrous run in the league which has seen them occupy the ninth place in the league table.

"We want to play well," the Scot added. "We've not done as well in the league as we should have. We want to put it right.

"We've got a lot of games coming up and can pick up points. But we need to do it, not talk about it."

Robin Van Persie’s absence from the squad should not hinder their chances on Sunday for the Red Devils have the Premier League’s finest number 10 in their squad. Wayne Rooney will take field for Manchester United for the 500th time if he is to start in the match against Villa and if he manages to score it will be his 150th goal for the Red Devils.

Aston Villa however will have to bring their A-game on Sunday if they are to get better of a Man United side who will be hungry for a victory after producing below par performances all season long.
The Villans have just won once in 33 meetings between the two clubs since 1999, the victory came back in December 2009 when Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the only goal of the match to give the Lions a 1-0 victory over their counterparts.

A victory can take Aston Villa on level points with United who are currently 11th in the league table with 19 points. Their record at home turf as however been disappointing with the Villans having lost four of the seven matches they have played in front of their own fans.

Paul Lambert’s men scored a 3-2 victory over Southampton last week despite of having a 23% possession in the match but lost 2-0 in their subsequent match against a struggling Fulham side.
Star midfielder Fabian Delph will miss Sunday’s home game due to suspension. Ron Vlaar will miss the match due to a calf injury whereas both Libor Kozak (ankle) and Antonio Luna (groin) are doubtful for the match. Joe Bennett (back), Charles N'Zogbia (calf) and Jores Okore (knee) add to Aston Villa’s unavailable list of players.

Apart from Robin Van Persie United are poised to be without Michael Carrick who has not regained fitness after undergoing a surgery. Meanwhile all of Marouane Fellaini (back), Chris Smalling (hamstring), Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra are doubts for the trip to Birmingham.
