In the biggest clash of the Bundesliga, at least in terms of standings, second takes on third in a monumental battle.

Preview: Leverkusen’s defiance stands in the way of Borussia Dortmund

Leverkusen does not quite possess the standing which Dortmund does on the international stage. This is no surprise, especially considering that Bayer 04 was recently humiliated by a United side which is struggling in its own league. Dortmund meanwhile reached the final last season and can qualify for the next round in this season’s competition with a win over Marseille.

Both coaches will have an eye on the European games in midweek and might choose to rest players accordingly. Dortmund, especially, has been depleted by injuries. Manuel Friedrich, the former Leverkusen defender, had to be signed by Klopp due to injuries to both Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic. They both will be out of this one along with Ilkay Gündogan. Marco Reus and Marcel Schmelzer are both doubtful too and might not be available. Klopp would do well to start Jonas Hoffman, who delivered a very good performance against Saarbrücken in the Pokal in midweek.

Leverkusen played a nervy match against Freiburg in the German Cup in midweek. The game was tied at 1-1 for a long period until former Bayern youth Emre Can scored the winner eight minutes from full time. Sebastian Boenisch is set to be out for Leverkusen along with Roberto Hilbert. Sidney Sam is doubtful for this one as well.

These two teams served up a memorable contest in their previous meeting. Dortmund took a quick 0-2 lead at the Bay Arena but Leverkusen came back in the second half to level the score at 2-2. Robert Lewandowski finally settled the contest with little over twenty minutes left on the clock. The match was a far cry from the defeat BVB inflicted on Die Werkself at Signal Iduna Park, 3-0.
Leverkusen has to beat Dortmund to prove that they can indeed give Bayern a run for their money this season. They are only three points behind the leaders and were described by Jürgen Klopp as a win machine this week.

“Leverkusen have become result machines, incredibly strong. They are always dangerous at set-pieces.

Both Leverkusen and we are struggling with injuries, but there will be no excuses. We want to win the game.

Playing against Leverkusen in every season is an absolute highlight. Beating Leverkusen is always something special."

Dortmund can take over second on virtue of superior goal difference if they win. A draw would keep Leverkusen second regardless of other results. Leverkusen somehow managed to take a point from Bayern this season. Now, they must wrestle away points from their Ruhr opponents to prove that whatever happens in Europe, they can stand between Germany’s two top powers and perhaps, even, stay in a title race in the long run.
