A Bremen side which was considered a challenge to Bayern’s dynasty will now take on the current rulers of European football, looking to avoid embarrassment.

Preview: Depleted Bayern taking on Robin Dutt’s incompetent Bremen

Bayern lost Arjen Robben to injury for six weeks against Augsburg in midweek in the DFB Pokal. Franck Ribery however returned and is set to play again. Philipp Lahm jogged this week while Claudio Pizarro and Xherdan Shaqiri seem prepared to come back onto the pitch as well.

Bremen fans may long for the days of Johann Micoud and later Miroslav Klose but those days are firmly in the past. Thomas Schaaf’s quiet exit last season was almost a mirror of the situation of the club itself. Quietly, Bremen has slipped down the table season after season and is now a relegation contender. They were humiliated by Bayern in their previous meeting; the Bavarians laughed their way to a 6-1 win. It is easy to forget that a Bremen side spearheaded by Mesut Özil had humiliated Bayern 2-5 in 2008.

Werder would do well to remember the meeting at the Weserstadion last season when they held Bayern for 80 minutes until Luiz Gustavo unleashed. Bayern took the game 0-2 with Mario Mandzukic adding a second. Unfortunately, Dutt’s Green and Whites look more incompetent in defense than Schaaf’s side. Bremen just does not look like a side worthy of challenging Bayern now.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Holger Badstuber are out for Bayern while Philipp Lahm is doubtful. Bremen has a host of injured players including Zlatko Junuzovic, Sebastian Prödl, Predrag Stevanovic and Lukas Schmitz. Toni Kroos’ younger brother, Felix Kroos, who recently scored his first goal for Bremen, is set to be out too with a knee injury.

Bayern should take this game; however, if the match between PSG and Evian in Ligue 1 is anything to go by, Bremen, long ago a serious challenger to Bayern’s throne, might break the long unbeaten streak which even Borussia Dortmund could not stop.
