A loss will squander Celtic’s chances of making it to the next round as they prepare to take on AC Milan on Tuesday in a Champions League encounter.

Celtic could upset Milan on November 26, 2013.Preview: Milan hoping to make a response after weekend disappointment

The Italian giants were acquainted with irate fans at the San Siro who refused to let the players leave the stadium following Milan’s 1-1 draw against ten men Genoa. After finishing last season on a high note the Rossoneri  have begun the new season in peculiar fashion and their antics have seen them slip down to 13th place in the league table.

Milan took a lead early in the game but surrendered it soon and even though they had a lot of chances with Genoa down to ten men, Mattia Perin’s heroics between the posts denied Milan three points. Mario Balotelli in particular came under a lot of criticism, the former Manchester City who is known for his calmness in front of the goal, uncharacteristically failed to convert a penalty in the 36th minute which was the second time he has done so this season.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side are now without a win in their last seven matches in all competitions which has seen the distance between themselves and league leaders Roma stretch to 18 points. The former Cagliari trainer’s job is under intense scrutiny but the 46 year old has urged supporters to back up the players in this difficult time.

"At the moment, we can’t seem to score," the 46-year-old told journalists at a post-match press conference.

"As we did against Chievo [a 0-0 draw in early November] we gave away nothing away to our opponent. It’s disappointing as it’s a difficult time for us. There’s some bitterness but form here on, we have to get out of this all together."

The Italian international insisted that his team would do their best to make a response in the midweek Champions League game in order to guarantee qualification to the next round.

"There are still many points up for grabs and we have to get through to the next round of the Champions League. We have to make things happen on our favour.”

Their opponents on Tuesday are defending Scottish champions Celtic, who have quite an impressive home record in European competitions. The Bhoys have won 16 of the 23 matches they have played in the group stages of Europe’s elite competition, but are currently rock bottom in Group H. A win however could send them to second place, with Ajax most likely to drop points against Barcelona.

Neil Lennon's side have been impeccable in the league so far and are currently top of the table enjoying a five point lead over second placed Inverness CT. The Celts extended their unbeaten run to 16 games in the league with a win over Aberdeen. Derk Boerrigter and Kris Commons scored goal apiece in injury time as Celtic cruised to a 3-1 victory.

Celtic lost 1-0 to Ajax in their last outing at the Amsterdam Arena but have fared quite well at home turf this season. The Hoops recorded wins over Cliftonville, Elfsborg and Shakhter Karagandy in the qualifying round and also defeated Ajax 2-1 at the Celtic Park. Their only loss at home came against European heavyweights Barcelona who defeated the Scots 1-0.

Georgios Samaras and James Forrest have been the top performers for Celtic in the Champions League having scored three goals each, whereas midfielder Kris Commons has also contributed, scoring twice in European competitions in addition to his six in the league.

Last time the Bhoys squared off against Milan in the reverse fixture, the Rossoneri  cruised to a 2-0 victory courtesy of an own goal from Emilio Izaguirre followed by a late strike from Sulley Muntari.
Celtic will be without captain Scott Brown who will serve suspension after kicking out at Barcelona’s Neymar when the two sides met at Celtic Park. The hosts will also be without Adam Matthews (broken collarbone) and Steven Mouyokolo (Achilles).

However the Hoops should be able to welcome back James Forrest and Anthony Stokes both of whom missed the 3-1 victory over Aberdeen due to hamstring and personal reasons respectively.
For Milan, Stephan El Shaarawy has returned to training but will not be fit in time to make it to the squad for the Champions League encounter, defender Cristian Zaccardo (ankle) and Marco Amelia (knee) will also miss out.
