Goodison Park will play host to the first Merseyside derby of the season as Liverpool and Everton go head to head for the 189th time in the league.

Everton and Liverpool will play in November 23, 2013's lunch-time kick-off.Preview: Roberto Martinez hoping to relish in Merseyside derby debut

Saturday’s encounter will see two former Swansea bosses go head to head and for the Everton Boss it will be his first Merseyside derby. Games between Everton and Liverpool have always been very high intensity matches and form and league standings have no significance when the two sides meet one another.

Roberto Martinez has recognized the importance of the celebrated fixture and has termed the Merseyside derby as being ‘unique’ for the energy it produces.

“There are many local clashes in which you can see real passion, but I don’t think anything has been anywhere near what I’m expecting on Saturday," said the former Wigan boss.

“I’ve heard many stories, especially from the kit room, about the history of the club, and I know that the Merseyside derby is quite unique and quite special. I don’t think it should be compared to any other in world football."

“It comes from that feeling of having the red and the blue spread out in the city, and through families and the workplace. It’s a quite unique football fixture because of the meaning it brings with it. I think this one is extra significant. It’s between two teams who are in the top six and are so close to each other.

However this time around the tie between the two sides will not be a mid-table squabble like it has been in recent times. Both Liverpool and Everton have started their new season in tremendous fashion with only three points separating the two.

Liverpool find themselves in a better place, Brendan Rodger’s men are two points behind leaders Arsenal and the Reds can go top of the table with a victory over the toffees. Everton on the other hand have just lost once this season, but five draws in 11 games means that they are only the sixth best side in the league so far. The Blues have however failed to find the net in two of their last games against Crystal Palace and Everton.

Everton’s lack of imagination in front of the goal will definitely be a worry for Roberto Martinez whose defensive line will have a horrendous task in containing two of Premier League’s finest strikers. Both Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have been impeccable this season having scored 16 out of the 21 goals Liverpool have scored so far in the league.

Such is the importance of having Luis Suarez in the side that club owner  John W Henry has dispatched his private jet to Suarez’s expense, so that the Uruguayan can be shipped back to England in time for the big game. The former Ajax man was expected to arrive late, following a successful stint with his national side which saw them clinch a place in the last 32 of the World Cup.

Daniel Sturridge who played 90 minutes as England lost 1-0 to Germany at Wembley, has been declared a doubt for Saturday’s encounter.  According to his manager Brendan Rodgers the 24 year old was already carrying an injury when he joined up with England squad but can still make it in time for the tie at Goodison Park.

“He went to England with an injury. He’s had a dead leg for three to four weeks, and he’s been playing through with it. He hardly trained when he left after the Fulham game," said the 40 year old.

“But sometimes managers are led by players as well. You as a manager can only ask the player how they feel.  If they say they’re happy, they want to play – and want to play 90 minutes – then that’s something you’ll consider.”

“Roy’s obviously spoken with Daniel and he’s played the game. We’ll assess him. He’s obviously back recovering after that, and we’ll see how it is over the next couple of days.”

Apart from the prolific duo, Mamadou Sakho is another of Liverpool’s players who will be high on spirits after guiding France to a World Cup berth. The former PSG defender scored the opening goal and had a hand in the decisive one in Paris and he will be hoping to keep the momentum going when he takes part in his first Merseyside derby.

Roberto Martinez on the other hand will be hoping for Romelu Lukaku to make a difference when his side takes on Liverpool. The Chelsea loanee has scored five of the 11 goals Everton have scored since he made his move to Goodison Park and he will be raring to make his mark on Saturday.

Kolo Toure is certain to miss Saturday’s clash has he nurses his muscle injury, whereas Iago Aspas and Sebastian Coates will remain on the sidelines. Everton on the other hand have no fresh injury concerns but are likely to be without Antolin Alcaraz, Darron Gibson and Arouna Kone.
