It will be all guns blazing as Cardiff welcome Swansea City to Cardiff City Stadium in a South-Wales derby on Sunday, the 3rd of November 2013.

South Wales derby - a historic one takes place on November 3, 2013 in the English Premier League.Preview: Cardiff and Swansea set stage for first BPL Welsh derby

Cardiff’s promotion to England’s top tier football league means, that the Barclays Premier League will for the first time play host to a Welsh derby. When Cardiff played Arsenal in the FA Cup final back in 1927, it was reported that hundreds of Swansea fans travelled miles to support their fellow Welsh side. What used to be a friendly rivalry, has gradually turned into one of the fiercest rivalries in all of Britain.

With the hostility which exists between fans of both the clubs, security is expected to be very tight at the Cardiff City Stadium. Evidence of the stern rivalry between the two clubs was felt in its true essence back in 1993 when a match between the two clubs at Cardiff’s former home Ninian Park, saw fans tear apart the seats at the grandstand. As a result of the violent behaviour of a few, a major step was taken to ban away fans from the fixture.

Four years later a plan was devised which allowed away fans to watch the game from the stands, provided they were escorted to and out of the stadium. On Sunday, Swansea fans travelling to Cardiff are believed to be treated in a similar fashion.

Apart from the fans who will be in full voice to support their respective teams, the players themselves will leave no stone unturned when they take field on Sunday.

Swansea’s Spanish defender Angel Rangel who has represented his side on seven occasions against the bluebirds has reiterated that a match between the two sides will prove to be a spectacle, but also warned his teammates to keep their cool throughout the course of the match.

"I think it's going to be a loud game, really intense and a lot of emotions around," the Spaniard told reporters.

"[The other players] know it's always a crazy one but they haven't experienced it here yet."

"There is extra spice in it and it's going to be really exciting - probably the biggest ever - and the most important thing is to win it."

"It's a derby and the most important thing is to stick together and enjoy it," he added.

"Going to Cardiff is always difficult, we know that, but I don't think it's one you need any motivation for. We know exactly what it means to the fans and to the city.”

Swansea who are in their third consecutive campaign in England’s top flight football will definitely have an upper hand over their counterparts. Their involvement in the Premier League has seen them grow from strength to strength and last season the Swans were rewarded for their fine performance with a place in the Europa League, a competition in which the Jacks have fared very well so far.
Swansea are unbeaten in three games in all competition and will be hoping to keep the momentum going when they face their fierce rivals.

Cardiff on the other hand have not recorded a victory in any of their last three games, their last victory came in an away fixture against Fulham at the Craven Cottage. Their home form has been more dismal, with the bluebirds having managed just a single goal at their home turf since their 3-2 victory over Manchester City in their first ever Premier League home game.

The last time the two sides met was in the 2010-2011 season in the Championship with both encounters resulting in a 1-0 win for the away team. Swansea will be hoping for a similar result this time around, but the fans will probably be demanding more from their Spaniard forward Michu who after a blistering performance last season has only managed two goals in the league so far.

Cardiff City striker Andreas Cornelius will be Malky Mackay’s only injury concern. Swansea on the other hand will continue to have Pablo Hernandez on the sideline, who has suffered a recurrence of his thigh injury whereas full back Ben Davies will also miss the derby due to an ankle problem.
Jonjo Shelvey who missed the home fixture against West Ham with a hamstring injury, is likely to return the line-up and give Michael Laudrup a timely boost ahead of the Welsh derby.
