Preview: The World Cup qualifying match that will keep Uruguay looking
Reaching the 2014 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday evening is what is on the mind of every Ecuadorian and Chilean fan. To achieve that, they will need to play out a draw. That would offer them 26 points each and force Uruguay (currently three behind with 22 points) to settle for a playoff spot.
The Uruguayans have a negative goal difference (-1) compared to third-placed La Tri (+5) and fourth-placed La Roja (+3). Uruguay's upcoming opponents Argentina, meanwhile, share the best defensive record with Colombia in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table.
With only 12 goals allowed, the Argentines have conceded almost twice less than the Uruguayans (23) in a total of 15 matches. Four days after losing 1-0 in Quito, Oscar Tabarez’s men are looking to get the best out of themselves in Montevideo.
Should the Copa America champions beat the Albiceleste, the loser between Ecuador and Chile in Santiago could drop a place down and end the World Cup qualifying campaign in fifth position.
If Uruguay fail to get the result they are hoping for, they will have to settle for a two-legged playoff tie against AFC’s Jordan. The matches will be played next month, meaning that Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Diego Forlan and company will have to wait until November 20th to discover their fate ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
