As Manchester City welcome arch rivals Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium, here is a look at the top five battles between the opposing players that could decide the outcome of the Manchester derby.

Sergio Aguero vs Rio Ferdinand

The Argentine has so far, been a joy to watch this season. Despite being more of a number 10 player, Aguero has performed admirably as a secondary striker where his tenacity and supreme skill level becomes a nuisance for the best defenders out there.

Indeed, Rio Ferdinand will have his work cut out for him. Over the years, the England international has lost much of his pace which means that the former Leeds United man should look to use his experience as his prime weapon when he takes on Messi Junior’s godfather.

Marouane Fellaini vs Yaya Toure

Although his arrival at Old Trafford was not greeted with the greatest of enthusiasms, Marouane Fellaini has already shown what he can offer to David Moyes’ side in the years to come. The Belgian international will have to get accustomed to a different role from the one he was used to at Everton. Playing more defensively in his first two games has highlighted the Belgium international’s ability to dominate opponents, something that will be of vital use when he comes up against Yaya Toure.

The Ivory Coast star is also getting accustomed to a new position. The former Barcelona man has been given a license to roam around by Manuel Pellegrini which means that he will be coming up against the former Everton man in Sunday’s encounter.

Jesus Navas vs Patrice Evra

Although he has shown a tendency to tear forward to help his team in attack, Patrice Evra might be looking to play a more defensive game, thanks to the presence of Jesus Navas down the right flank. The Spain international is what you can call a classical winger, running tirelessly down the flank before whipping in a cross. In recent games, Evra has experienced a few lapses in concentration. Although such lapses can go unpunished against weaker sides, the France international will have no room for errors when he faces a player who is as creative as an excellent winger should be.

Wayne Rooney vs Fernandinho

Since deciding to stay at Manchester United, Wayne Rooney has given the distinct impression of a man on a mission. After scoring two goals against Bayer Leverkusen in the opening game of the Champions League group stages, Rooney will be looking to make sure that he is equally good against the neighbours.

The Englishman likes to drop deep which means that Fernandinho has to be on the move constantly to make sure that the attacker does not roam around at free will.

Nemanja Vidic vs Alvaro Negredo

The Serb centre-back is in for a busy outing thanks to the presence of Alvaro Negredo who likes to be on the move inside and outside the penalty area. The former Sevilla man has already scored two goals in the league this season and will be looking to make full use of the deliveries he gets from either side of the flanks. Strong and powerful in the ground and air, Negredo will definitely test Vidic to the limits.
