Preview: Another stalemate will not help Los Catrachos and El Tri
Who said heroes can’t fail? A couple of years ago, El Tri was enjoying a great period as rulers of the CONCACAF zone. After clinching the 2011 Gold Cup, the country’s U-23 side went on to conquer London by upsetting Brazil to clinch gold medals.
All these achievements suddenly seem to be far away. If Mexico want to cement their place in the group stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, they must start winning. As of now, they are third in the table with eight points, just above Honduras who currently qualify for a play-off clash against Oceania’s New Zealand.
The Mexicans have won only once in the Hexagonal. Their five other matches ended in draws. They know that their matches in September could completely convert their fears into confidence. Beating Honduras on Friday and USA next Tuesday would offer the Mexicans a massive 14 points.
Los Catrachos, meanwhile, have scored twice more goals than El Tri in the last round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. The visitors will be hoping to dismantle Mexico’s defence. However, the latter have also proven to be very tight at the back, allowing only a couple of goals in six games.
Mexico’s three home games in the Hex have all ended goalless. When they met Honduras in March 2013, they conceded a 2-0 lead within the last quarter of the game. The public at the Estadio Azteca may witness a close affair with perhaps very few goals.
