Ronaldo has snubbed the UEFA ceremony in Monaco to play against Deportivo.Preview: Ronaldo’s commitment makes the headlines

Cristiano Ronaldo was supposed to attend Thursday’s ceremony in Monaco for the UEFA Champions League draw and UEFA Best Player award. However, he has chosen to miss the occasion and feature for Real Madrid in the 68th edition of the Teresa Herrera Trophy.

Los Blancos have claimed this title eight times. The last time they held it was in 1994 when they beat today’s opponents, Deportivo La Coruna, by a goal to nil. Real Madrid’s previous challengers for the Teresa Herrera Trophy include Toulouse, Cruzeiro, and Sporting Gijon.

This Thursday, Carlo Ancelotti will play a strong squad which includes the likes of Iker Casillas, Mesut Özil, and Angel Di Maria. Deportivo president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro has congratulated the Spanish giants for this gesture, stating:

“It is an extraordinary effort coming here in between two league matches. You have to bear in mind that if you take into account official matches and international matches, there is virtually no time to rest midweek. It is the best gift that they could give to us.”

Deportivo were relegated to the Liga Adelante last season. Real Madrid, meanwhile, will face Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
