Match Preview: Reds target big win in League Cup encounter

After a great start to the new Premier League season, Brendan Rodgers would be expecting and hoping for his side to get the job done when they host third tier side Notts County in the second round game of the Capital One Cup. Notts County, who play in the Sky Bet League One, beat Fleetwood in the first round to set up a clash that they might not have been hoping for.

After a 2012/2013 campaign that saw them miss out on a place in European football, Liverpool have invested well in the transfer market to bring in players who have the potential to take the club forward.

One of those players is Belgium international, Simon Mignolet. Signed from Sunderland this summer, the shot stopper has been one of the reasons why his new side has demonstrated the ability to grind out results.

The Reds beat Aston Villa 1-0 away from home in a game which they dominated in the first half. However, the story was different altogether in the second half which saw Paul Lambert’s side dominate the visitors who had to thank their new number one for denying Christian Benteke by making a great save.

However, Liverpool might not be tested to their limits against Notts Country. The last time these two sides met was way back in the 1991/92 season (first Barclays Premier League season) in a game which the hosts Liverpool won 4-0. Historically, the Reds have almost always dominated Notts County and with the way the current Liverpool side is playing, it appears that the trend will not change.

In 82 games between the two, Liverpool have registered 35 wins and Notts have won on 15 occasions with 12 games having ended in draws.

Regardless, encounters in cup games can be very tricky at times as in past, Liverpool have been at the receiving end of a few upsets which is something the visitors would be thinking about as they make the trip to Merseyside.

This is the first time the two sides are meeting each other in a cup tie other than the FA Cup which is bound to add to the excitement.

In a bid to increase the tournament’s appeal, Michael Woodburn, Chief Marketing Officer at Capital One said,

“At Capital One we are delighted to announce a brilliant offer for fans, allowing around 10,000 supporters to introduce a friend to football in Round 1 or Round 2.  This research shows fans attend matches in many different ways, and we’re thrilled to help so many fans enjoy the start of another great journey in the Capital One Cup.”
