Aston Villa face Liverpool in the last match of the day on August 24, 2013Preview: Close battle between the Villains and the Reds?

Liverpool’s encounter against Stoke City last weekend somehow summed up what the English Premier League is made of: close competition and drama. Stoke, who finished in thirteenth position last season, pushed the Merseyside Reds all the way to the wire. The latter had goalscorer Daniel Sturridge and penalty hero Mignolet to thank for their efforts.

Being able to hang on to their lead by saving Jonathan Walters’ 89th minute penalty instantly added value to Liverpool’s three points and boosted the team’s confidence. The 2005 FA Cup winners will be keen to maintain their momentum by clinching victory this Saturday.

However, this is easier said than done. Aston Villa are also growing in confidence with Christian Benteke as their star man. The Villains got the better of Arsenal on the opening day of the 2013/14 English Premier League. They almost punished unconvincing Chelsea in midweek but fell on the wrong side of controversy. This 2-1 loss had Aston Villa’s coach exchange heated words with Jose Mourinho in the aftermath.

After wasting three good points at Stamford Bridge, expect manager Paul Lambert to rally his men against Brendan Rodgers’ red army. This late EPL kick-off could turn out to be a close encounter – much like what the public witnessed between Liverpool and Stoke City or Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Neither side will want to drop points, setting the stage for a thrilling matchup.
