Cristiano Ronaldo's presence hypes up the Real Madrid vs LA Galaxy International Champions Cup match.Preview: Dangerious LA Galaxy to test Ancelotti

MLS giants LA Galaxy take on a star-studded Real Madrid side for the fourth time in as many years and would be looking to finally get the better of the Castilians, something they have never done so in the last three encounters. Last year, the game between the two sides was a one-sided affair as Madrid romped their way to a thumping 5-1 win. However, LA coach Bruce Arena would be hopeful that this time around, his side offers stiffer resistance at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona.

When it comes to popularity, Real Madrid are larger than life. Led in the attack by Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, the most recognisable athletes on the planet, Madrid would definitely be cheered on by those attending the game.

This is the first time that Madrid will play in metro Phoenix and the Spaniards would be keen on leaving with a good impression. Facing defending MLS champions LA Galaxy in the first round of the International Champions Cup tournament however, will not be an easy task even though the last three meetings between the two sides have been fairly one-sided.

Moreover, winning the game against the nine-time European champions is imperative due to the fact that Galaxy are the only American flag-bearers in this tournament.

A lot of focus would also be on the performance of Landon Donavan who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players ever to have worn a USMNT jersey. And, Madrid defender Sergio Ramos is well aware of the potency of Donovan.

"Los Angeles Galaxy are a leading team in this country," Ramos told Real's official website.

"They’ve won two titles in a row and it’s always good to face the best in order to be as ready as possible for the official season. Their biggest player is Donovan, but Keane also makes a difference."

Although the game is more of a preseason warm-up, Ramos says that it is a good test for his team to play against a top team from another region.

The defender added: "They’ve also had strong growth in this country. They won the Gold Cup and continue to show progress and consistency today. As players we’re happy that they’re on par with the best competitions in the world."

Madrid’s season is yet to start but LA know that with the season gathering momentum, they need to add more consistency to their game. As things stand, the reigning MLS champions are in fourth palce in the Western Conference.
