After beating Tottenham Hotspur to his signature, Atletico Madrid have indeed acquired the services of a highly talented player. However, it remains to be seen if Villa will hit the same heights at Vicente Calderon or not
Barcelona confirmed that they have reached an agreement with fellow La Liga rivals, Atletico Madrid over the transfer of Spanish forward, David Villa. The World Cup winner will move to the Vicente Calderon after he agrees on personal terms and passes a medical. The signing is a bargain for Atleti who make an initial payment of 2.1 million euros and will then pay 3 million euros to the Catalonians if Villa stays at the club for the next three seasons.

Although the Catalan giants will retain 50% from any transfer in the future of the former Valencia star, it is highly unlikely that the striker would command a considerable transfer fee.

Regardless, the signing is quite a steal for the club who recently lost the services of talismanic striker Radamel Falcao to the spending spree of AS Monaco. Initially, Tottenham were touted as front runners for Villa’s signature but the residents of White Hart Lane will now have to look elsewhere in order to do something about their striker situation.

Villa arrives in the capital of Spain at the age of 31 which indeed isn’t a ripe one in any case. The striker arrives at a club that has the tendency to produce or sign strikers who score goals at a phenomenal rate. Indeed, the last few top scorers of the club have been Fernando Torres, Kun Aguero and Radamel Falcao which means that the club’s supporters would be expecting Villa to keep the tradition alive.

However, any such notions that Villa would be a free scoring striker like his predecessor should be discarded due to many reasons. The Spain international arrives at Vicente Calderon as a shadow of his former self. The past two seasons have been quite cruel to the product of Sporting Gijon’s youth academy.

Rewind to the 2011/2012 season when the forward broke his tibia during a FIFA Club World Cup game against Al Sadd. That injury saw the player miss the rest of the season and also miss out on the national side’s European Championship retaining journey at the Euro 2012. Since that horrific injury, nothing has been the same for Villa. Last season, the player was not used as much as he would have liked and neither was he a regular starter in the Spanish side that lost the Confederations Cup final to Brazil just a few weeks back.

However, one should not rule out the possibility of Villa rejuvenating himself at Atletico Madrid. Despite not being a regular member of the starting eleven, Villa scored 16 goals in 39 appearances for Barcelona last season which just goes on to show that he is still a big player.
Things might turn out differently for Villa when he begins a new chapter in what has been predominantly an illustrious career. Although he might not be the kind of player who used to bamboozle defences , Villa will definitely be in the thick of things for Diego Simeone’s side but might need a strike partner who can share the goalscoring burden with him.

During his last few months at Barcelona, Villa struggled with form largely due to the fact that he was not able to break into the starting lineup. At Atletico Madrid however, he will be given a lot of chances to show the world that he is still the same player he was a few years back and will be looking to rejuvenate his career.
