CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers – June 18: Preview
Whereas the Confederations Cup 2013 unfolds in Brazil with 2011 Gold Cup Mexico looking to bounce back from last Sunday’s loss to Italy in the group stages, four of CONCACAF’s other big nations will engage in 2014 World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. The matches in question are USA vs Honduras and Costa Rica vs Panama.
The U.S. Men’s National Team can enter Tuesday’s fixture full of confidence. Thanks to last week’s 2-0 win over Panama, the Americans hold the top spot in the Hexagonal with 10 points – two more than second-placed Costa Rica. The encounter at the Rio Tinto will be an engaging physical affair, according to Jurgen Klinsmann who was quoted as saying by Goal.com during a press conference on Monday:
"There will be a lot of battles on the field all over the place but we want to play our game, we want to be dominant hopefully on the field and take care of things the sooner the better."
Honduras, meanwhile, are struggling to keep their 2014 World Cup qualification hopes alive but the win against Jamaica has given them something to build on. Los Catrachos enter the sixth game of their CONCACAF Fourth Round World Cup qualification campaign in fourth place with seven points.
They could open up a two-point lead over Mexico and remain over Panama. The latter have dropped below the qualification zone after being held at home to El Tri and losing to USA this month. Victory against Costa Rica is much needed.
