With the Champions League final on the horizon, Borussia Dortmund certainly have a task on hand to convince their star players that the club is the right place to be after losing star-man Mario Gotze to rivals Bayern Munich.
Regardless of the outcome on Saturday night, no one can deny the fact that Borussia Dortmund have made their mark on the 2012/2013 season. Back in 2008, soon after coming out of a financial catastrophe that almost obliterated their very existence from the face of German football, Die Borussen have worked their way towards a growth model that has perfectly been complimented by performance on the pitch.
No more do BVB punch above their weight in the transfer market.

Winning back to back Bundesliga crowns is proof of the fact that a club can guarantee success even if it treads carefully. However, treading carefully carries itself one huge risk which is losing star players.

In the past three seasons, the club from the Gelsenkirchen has lost a few star players despite winning so many accolades on a consistent basis. Their domestic success about two years back came at the price of a parting of ways with Turkish international, Nuri Sahin. The young midfielder was a product of the club’s youth academy and when Real Madrid came calling, he could not resist the temptation to leave Signal Iduna Park in order to be a part of the Galacticos.

Last season, Shinji Kagawa, a player who was the cornerstone of everything good the club had done in recent years, found a move to Manchester United too appealing and left after just two years in Germany.

As things stand, Borussia Dortmund are set to lose the services of another home grown talent in the shape of Mario Gotze. The young German international is definitely one of the best young players in Europe at the moment and will be wearing the colours of BVB’s UCL final opponents, Bayern Munich from next season.

The young midfielder’s decision to leave a club that made him the player he is today has angered a lot of fans and it will be quite interesting to see what sort of reception he receives upon his return to Signal Iduna Park next season.

All season long, the future of star striker, Robert Lewandowski has come under intense scrutiny. Thanks to his goal-scoring antics and those four goals that he scored in a 4-1 thumping of Real Madrid, the Pole could be leaving the club this summer.

Similarly, futures of Marco Reus, Ilkay Gundogan and Marcel Schmelzer are also subject to attention from a lot of clubs across Europe. Certainly, Jurgen Klopp will not want to lose services of a batch of players that is currently one of the best in Europe and has been angered by the pursuit of his players by various clubs in Europe. The German tactician has insisted that his club is not a ‘supermakret’ but expressed his vulnerability at not being able to match wages which other European heavyweights can offer.

Keeping hold of star players is what separates great clubs from the good ones and that is what should be on the minds of Borussia Dortmund when they take on Bayern. For BVB, winning the Champions League could possibly go a long way in assuring an even better tomorrow. Should they manage to win the Champions League final at Wembley, the triumph would be a silent message to the current star players that if they want to end their careers with a lot of medals to show for their efforts, BVB is the place they need to be at.

Winning a trophy as prestigious as the Champions League, opens new avenues and increases a club’s ability to attract the best talents. For that very reason, BVB should devise a way to beat a domestic rival at the continental stage, doing so might allow them to replace many of the star players they have lost in the recent years.
