A Lewandowski-inspired Borussia Dortmund butchered Real Madrid 4-1 in Germany last Wednesday. Los Blancos, however, refuse to give up on making the Champions League final at Wembley.

Jose Mourinho is confident that Real Madrid will hit back at Borussia Dortmund's haunting German spirit. The spirit ruling at the Santiago Bernabeu presently is one marked with faith to pull off a historic upset come Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Every area of Jose Mourinho’s squad will be tested – from the defence to the attack, from the physical stamina to the mental power. Los Blancos have done it many times in the past but what are the current team’s chances of recording a miraculous result against Jurgen Klopp’s perfectly trained Dortmund at the Bernabeu?

We look at a range of post-match quotes which illustrate Real Madrid’s belief that the tie ‘es remontable’ (can be overturned).

1) Pepe: “We did not start the match well. The important thing is that we can turn around the tie and get to the final. We have to think about ourselves. We played badly and we have to accept it, but there is still a match to go.”

Expensive mistakes can only be rectified through priceless perfection. Real Madrid will need to sweat blood at the Bernabeu to revive their hope of winning La Decima in 2013.

2) Xabi Alonso: “The fans' support will be crucial in the second leg, but we have to be the ones to make the first move so that they can get behind us.”

Unlike Barcelona’s Camp Nou supporters or Galatasaray’s Telekom Arena fans, the Santiago Bernabeu’s home crowd can hardly boast of creating one of Europe’s most thrilling atmospheres during matches. On Wednesday night, hundreds of travelling Madrid fans even reacted angrily as the team left Germany. “Less money and more balls!” is what some shouted.

In the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final tie against Borussia Dortmund, the team cannot afford to concede the first goal. Such an incident would turn the white side of the Spanish capital into a cemetery. To keep the fire of revival burning, it will be up to Real Madrid’s players to ‘make the first move’.

3) Sergio Ramos: “We lacked the right attitude starting with me and then counting on everyone else. […] You have to believe in your ability to correct the situation, but against a German team it is very difficult.”

Remarkably, Borussia Dortmund are not any German team. They are powered by home-grown players and a certain Lewandowski who plays to the tune of the club’s poetic motto, ‘Echte Liebe’ (‘True Love’). Lewandowski will be looking for goals for Borussia Dortmund at the Santiago Bernabeu.

4) Iker Casillas: “Anything can happen in 90 minutes. We've got to get out there and give your all on the pitch to go through to the final at Wembley. We've got one more chance.”

Whether the veteran keeper will be in post on Tuesday is still unknown. What is clear, however, is that Real Madrid need to do everything to keep their lines clean while the forward line – led by UEFA Champions League top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo – must find at least three goals.

5) Diego Lopez: “We have the faith and the conviction that we can complete the comeback. This [4-1] match is already forgotten about. In the heads of everyone to do with Real Madrid is the Bernabeu on Tuesday. It is a ground where there have been some historic miraculous comebacks.”

On this note, let us look at morale-boosting statistics from a Real Madrid point of view. History has it that Los Blancos have managed no less than three terrific comebacks in the competition.
