It has been a disappointing season for the Italians in Europe, with none of the clubs succeeding to go through to the semi-final of either the UEFA Champions League, or the UEFA Europa League.
The Italians have a rich history of football in both Europe and the World, with the national team winning the Fifa World Cup on four occasions, and Italian clubs lifting European trophies several times. However, this season proved to be a barren period on the European stage. Here we look at the different clubs that represented Italy in Europe this season:

Juventus

Juventus is the leading Serie A team of the season. It has recorded the greatest number of wins in the league and its goal difference of 42 towers above all others.

However, in Europe, Juventus’ run to the final was cut short in the quarter-finals by a clinical Bayern Munich side that left the Italians unanswered. It appeared as if the dynamics of the German club had left the Italians exhausted and eventually short of ideas. Although Juventus did top the group in the Group stages, the confidence it got from there did not prove to be enough to fuel the journey till the final.

AC Milan

AC Milan is no stranger to European success, having won seven UEFA Champions League trophies and standing as a runner-up at four other occasions. However, with the last win coming in 2007, AC Milan would have been eager to win this one to restore its towering European reputation. With the Serie A title out of reach, AC Milan would have felt delighted to be part of the semi-final stage of the competition that is to be played.

After an inspiring display in the round of 16 at home where the club defeated tournament favorites Barcelona 2-0, the Rossoneri succumbed to a 4-0 defeat in the second leg that followed, that ended their European campaign.

Inter Milan

Inter Milan has had a disappointing season in the Serie A as well as in Europe. The club has bagged 18 Serie A titles in its decorated history, and a current 7th position does not do justice to its past glories. The two seasons under Jose Mourinho was a glorious period for the club where, under the Special One, the club won the Serie A, Supercoppa Italiana, Copa Italia, Fifa Club World Cup and most importantly, the UEFA Champions League.

With Mourinho’s departure a void was left that has yet to be fulfilled. This season, the club contested in the UEFA Europa League where it stood second in the group stages, eventually getting knocked in the round of 16, a bit harshly, by English side Tottenham Hotspur.

Lazio

With the bigger Italian names faltering in Europe, Lazio tried its level best to make an impact in the UEFA Europa League. Currently in the Serie A, Lazio is chasing Fiorentina for a possible UEFA Champions League position next season.

In Europe, the club did well to top Group J above Tottenham, but the two goals it conceded in Turkey in the quarter-final stage against Fernabache proved to be too big a blow for any further progress in the competition.
