Ezequiel Garay has been impressive since his transfer from Real Madrid to Benfica. His positive performances have Alex Ferguson ready to make him Rio Ferdinand's replacement.

Lisbon side Benfica has been well aware of Manchester United's interest in Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay. For quite some time now, his performances have been beyond impressive, which has caused many European sides to scout the central defender.

After scouting Garay in Benfica's match against Porto at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, it appears that Manchester United have finally made a first official offer for the defender.

The English side tabled a bid of £12.5 million, which Benfica was quick to wave away.

Benfica president has made it clear that he wants an offer of no less than £25 million before they can consider selling the 26 year-old.

Due to Benfica only owning a certain percentage of Garay's player rights, they will want to make sure they make as much profit as possible, if they are to actually sell him.

Despite this deal most likely not going to be completed this month, Spanish newspaper Marca believes that it will very well be completed in the summer.

Signing Garay would be a big boost to the Manchester United defense which has been dubbed as very suspect and poor at times. With a healthy Nemanja Vidic and Garay along side him, the Red Devils defense could really improve significantly.
