It is official. Pep Guardiola will coach in Germany next season and not in England. The ex-Barcelona manager has chosen Bayern Munich over Chelsea and all other interested clubs.
The 41-year-old is one of world football’s most successful managers having led the Blaugrana to 14 cup triumphs in four years. The former Spanish international left Camp Nou last year after admitting that he felt worn out by the amount of pressure and responsibilities related to his job.
Pep Guardiola announced his decision to take a one-year break. In the meantime, speculations in the English media strongly linked him to clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City and even Manchester United where Sir Alex Ferguson is the boss since 1986.
During the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala on January 7, Guardiola confirmed his plan to return to football this year. On Wednesday, Bayern Munich declared their capture of the two-time UEFA Champions League winning coach.
“We are very happy that we managed to land the expert Pep Guardiola for our club. He was contacted by lots of big clubs,” said Bayern Munich’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
“Pep is one of the most successful coaches in the world and we are convinced, that he will not only shine for Bayern but for the whole of German football. We look forward to our common work from July 2013 on.”
Bayern Munich are in a good position in Europe like domestically. Departing coach Jupp Heynckes is poised to end his coaching career at the Allianz Arena on a high before Pep Guardiola takes over in summer.
