FA Cup and UEFA Champions League titleholders Chelsea are back from their tour in America. This weekend, they play Brighton in East Sussex. The new club football season without the likes of Didier Drogba is just around the corner so Di Matteo is looking to boost his side’s morale.
“Every day in training is an opportunity, the friendlies are opportunities,” Roberto Di Matteo told the press ahead of the match against Brighton.
“On Saturday I am looking forward to a good competitive game for us, and also to test a couple of things, and get some players with 90 minutes in their legs so that we can get the majority of players with that amount under their belt.”
Elsewhere, Chelsea’s FA Community Shield opponents Manchester City face German club Wolfsburg. Striker Edin Dzeko will be under the spotlight on his return to Germany. The Bosnian is determined to prove his worth under Roberto Mancini but he has now been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium.
“In the second half of last season, I suddenly got to start far fewer games - and I’ve got no idea why. I lost my rhythm. I joined City in order to play in matches,” Dzeko told The Sun.
“I never imagined that things would turn out the way they have. I am too good for the bench. If I continue to sit matches out, then anything is possible.”
