France entered the match having never lost to Spain in a competitive fixture. However, Spain were determined to live up to expectations and recall that all good things come to an end.
An unusual name got on the scoring sheet as Xabi Alonso broke the deadlock with his 14th international goal to mark his 100th cap with the Spanish national team. The 1-0 deficit forced the French to improve on the defensive aspect of their game.

At the half-time whistle, France’s players looked somewhat relieved. They could at last regroup in the dressing room ahead of another 45 minutes of intense action.

In the second period, Franck Ribery was more alive. At times, Spain seemed threatened. However, the UEFA European Championship titleholders always seemed to be much in control.

Spain needed that special final touch in front of goal. Consequently, coach Vicente del Bosque took off Cesc Fabregas and sent in Fernando Torres. The task of the Chelsea player was straightforward: to help La Furia Roja kill off Les Bleus with a second goal.

He was put clear on goal at a couple of occasions. However, at the relief of France’s anxious supporters, the linesman was there to raise his flag for offside.

At the other end of the pitch, Les Bleus were under pressure to find an equalizer. The introduction of Samir Nasri was meant to increase the team’s attacking chances. Meanwhile, time was running out and the Spaniards made sure of maintaining their authority all over the field.

Xabi Alonso had the chance to finish the business through the penalty spot. He did not miss. He completed his brace by sending France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris the wrong way.

Spain will face Portugal in the semi-finals at UEFA Euro 2012 on Wednesday, June 27.
