Tottenham is hanging on to third spot in the Premier League by a thread. The only competition they can realistically win this season is the FA Cup.
Spurs required two legs to fend off Stevenage in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The first leg ended goalless. In the second leg, when Joel Byrom opened the score for Stevenage, fans must have thought they were in for a shock result. Spurs came roaring back instead and scored thrice, one of which was scored from the penalty spot by Emmanuel Adebayor, sandwiched in between two Jermain Defoe goals.

Harry Redknapp has a bench full of talented players to call upon to participate in two competitions. Bolton does not have that luxury to say the least. They beat Millwall 0-2 in the previous round to book this quarter-final clash with Spurs. While Owen Coyle’s ultimate goal is survival this season, giving up on a trophy after coming so close to the final isn’t an option.

The form of both teams coming into this one isn’t good. Spurs lost 1-3 to United, beat Stevenage and recorded another Premier League defeat in the hands of Everton last week. Bolton lost 3-0 to Chelsea and followed it up with a 2-0 loss to Manchester City. They did record a much needed victory over QPR though last week, 2-1.

The previous meeting in the Premier League between these two sides was a one-sided one with Spurs winning 3-0. Spurs won the meeting prior to that as well, 2-1. The last time Tottenham traveled to Bolton, they were beaten by an astounding score-line of 4-2. However, this game takes place in White Hart Lane and the advantage is clearly with Spurs considering they won their previous three meetings with Bolton there.

These two sides met in the FA Cup in February 2010. Spurs went on a rampage that night and scored four goals without reply. Bolton will hope to avoid such an embarrassing score-line this time around but there is a possibility such a score-line could be repeated considering Spurs’ attacking options.

What awaits the winner is a spot in Wembley for the semi-finals and both sides will surely want an opportunity to play there. Who will win this?

Prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Bolton
