Arsenal recorded a vital 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in the English Premier League on Monday night, much to the delight of coach Arsene Wenger.
A few weeks ago, Arsenal were 10 points behind Tottenham Hotspur. Now, the Gunners are only 1 point behind. The battle to steal the third and last automatic Champions League spot away from Spurs is very much alive.

“I have never questioned our spirit. It was a game of absolute commitment from both sides,” Arsene Wenger told reporters after the game at the Emirates Stadium.

Thanks to Robin Van Persie’s first-half goal and to Thomas Vermaelen’s 95th minute winner, Arsenal hit 52 points on Monday night. Commenting on the victory, Wenger continued:

“We needed something special to beat them [Newcastle United] and what beat them was our relentless effort to win. There was never a point when I thought we wouldn't win such is the belief in this team.”

Man-of-the-match Theo Walcott added:

“Tottenham will be looking over their shoulders now. It's been an up and down season but it is how you finish that counts.”

Arsenal don’t have anything to play for this season apart from Champions League qualification in the English Premier League. Next up, the Gunners will come up against Everton. Arsenal have a full week to prepare for this fixture as there’s no midweek Champions League action or weekend FA Cup thrill for them.
