Manchester United vs Liverpool opens an exciting weekend of action in the EPL

Angela Asante, February 9 2012,
Where else to kick off this weekend’s English Premier League drama but at Old Trafford where Manchester United and Liverpool are set to fire bombs?

Manchester United vs Liverpool

The Red Devils earned a point in controversial fashion last Sunday. Two crucial penalty decisions went in their favor as Chelsea dropped a 3-0 lead and thus two precious points at the Bridge.

Manchester United are now two points behind league leaders Manchester City. Ferguson’s men could temporarily claim the top spot but will Liverpool allow them to do so?

The Merseyside Reds have a pretty good record against Manchester United so they can confidently fancy their chances of winning. Liverpool should find pride, favor and hope in the following: their FA Cup triumph over Man United in January, Man City’s 6-1 humiliation of the Red Devils at Old Trafford and Blackburn Rovers’ 3-2 giant-killing at the same venue back in December.

Liverpool stumbled to a goalless draw on Monday night against Spurs. The urge to bounce back is high given that the competition in the top half of the English Premier League’s table is tight. Liverpool have dropped to seventh in the standings but they could temporarily rocket into the Europa League zone—which is currently occupied by Newcastle United—on Saturday.

Everton vs Chelsea

Later on, Chelsea will play Everton in one of the day’s 3:00pm GMT (10:00am EST) kick-offs. The Toffees are locked on 30 points like tenth-placed Swansea City and twelfth-placed Stoke City. They’ll be hoping to hit Chelsea hard in the chest this weekend. Everton spoiled the chance of grabbing all three points on Matchday 24 against Wigan Athletic as Tim Howard committed a blunder.

Everton are unbeaten in all competitions since January 11 so AVB and his players will have to be on their guards at Goodison Park. It is at this venue that Roberto Mancini’s rampant Manchester City suffered a setback on the last day of the previous month.

Chelsea have been seating in fourth position for too long this season. Winning the title is perhaps over for the Blues but automatic qualification into next season’s Champions League group stages is a realistic prospect. Chelsea enter Matchday 25 with 43 points, 7 less than third-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Sunderland vs ArsenalHow much can Henry and Van Persie inspire Arsenal this season?

What can Arsene Wenger’s Gunners do after demolishing Blackburn Rovers 7-1 last weekend? Hosts Sunderland are fresh from two consecutive victories in the English Premier League.

They are also unbeaten on home soil since November 26 when they lost to Wigan. Blackburn Rovers, Everton, Manchester City, Swansea City and more recently Norwich City have all dropped points at Sunderland since then.

Arsenal are under pressure to pick as many points as possible. They are behind Chelsea and Newcastle United with 40 points from a possible 72. They’ve won only 50% of all their league matches thus far. This record is not ideal for Gooners who are anxiously dreaming about next year’s Champions League campaign.

In the late kick-off, Tottenham Hotspur will battle it out against Newcastle United at White Hart Lane. Spurs lost ground at Anfield on Monday. They now find themselves 5 points behind Manchester United and 7 points behind Manchester City.

Talking about the Citizens, they will be away to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon. City have to improve on their away form before the English Premier League title slips away from their reach.
