Liverpool is on a high after reaching the Carling Cup final and will have their sights set on knocking out their major rivals Manchester United from England’s other cup competition.
Liverpool claimed a major scalp by knocking Manchester City out of the Carling Cup. They achieved the feat over two legs. In the first leg at the Etihad Stadium, Kenny Dalglish’s side showed great determination. City kept knocking on the door throughout the match but Liverpool defended with great strength and kept them out. A Steven Gerrard penalty saw them win the game.

In the second leg, Liverpool started well and tried to defend their lead. In the second half, City took a 2-1 lead and had the tie wrapped up. Liverpool nonetheless is a gritty team in their own backyard and scored an equalizer via a man who has been the hero on the field and a villain off it multiple times in his career, Craig Bellamy. They won the tie, 3-2, on aggregate.

United won at the Etihad too, 2-3, in the FA Cup in a match filled with controversial decisions. Vincent Kompany was sent off and United took a 0-3 lead before being pegged to 2-3. Ultimately, City’s ten men could not do enough to tie the game. United must have been relieved to get one over their neighbours considering the humiliation they suffered in Old Trafford.

United is coming into the match on a high as well following a 1-2 win over Arsenal in the Emirates, a match which they dominated for large spells. Danny Welbeck proved that he is coming off age as he scored the winner by making his way past Andrei Arshavin. United showed plenty of guile in that match as they put together short passes in the Arsenal penalty area.

The meeting between Liverpool and United in the Premier League resulted in a 1-1 draw. Sir Alex himself admits that his side has not been able to get the better of Liverpool in recent matches despite having won so many trophies in years that have been quite barren for Liverpool.

Javier Hernandez’s late goal in the 1-1 draw ensured United did not win a third straight match against their rivals. Memories of Dirk Kuyt’s hat-trick in this fixture must haunt United fans to this day. Sir Alex believes that United can stop Liverpool in their tracks as all streaks come to an end. This is what he had to say:

“Both clubs will always have their moments. We want to get back to the time when we were beating them (Liverpool) regularly.”

Finally, we all know about the problems between the two sets of fans when it comes to this fixture. ‘Bad blood’ is a phrase which is commonly used when it comes to describing clashes between United and City There has been call for ‘fan unity’ from Liverpool’s managing director Ian Ayre.

If the two sets of fans get their acts together, they and the neutrals should be treated to a wonderful game tomorrow.
