Racing Santander vs Valencia Preview

Los Che are yet to record a league win in 2012. After ending 2011 with a comprehensive 2-0 defeat of Malaga, they opened this year with a 2-2 draw away to Villarreal.

This is a game they could have won but a bad start to it saw them conceded 2 goals during the first 20 minutes. It took a late strike from Aduriz to snatch a point for the visitors.

Valencia then hosted Real Sociedad with the task of bouncing back from their draw against the Yellow Submarines. Unfortunately for Los Che, Sociedad’s underdog spirit was too strong to overcome. Despite gathering as much as 61% of ball possession, Valencia lost 1-0 at the end of the day only to lift some pressure off the shoulders of second-placed Barcelona.

With their 1-1 draw against Osasuna last weekend, Valencia found themselves 9 points behind Barca and 4 points above Levante. They will go into Sunday’s match with 35 points – 15 more than sixteenth-placed Racing Santander.

But Valencia cannot allow themselves to get carried away by their terrific Copa del Rey form. They are fresh from a 7-1 aggregate victory over Levante in the quarterfinals of the Spanish cup. How can they translate this form in La Liga?

Concentration could influence Los Che’s chances against Santander. Lack of focus saw them drop 2 vital points away to Osasuna last week.

Soldado’s 85th minute goal seemed enough to hand Valencia a 1-0 win but Lolo’s 90th minute equalizer spoiled the bouncing back mission.

As for Racing Santander, they have picked up 6 points from a possible 9 in January. They prevented Levante and Real Madrid (with a 0-0 result) and Sevilla (with a 2-2 draw) from winning earlier in La Liga. Can they hold Valencia too?
