Robin Van Persie is having a special season. With three goals in the final two matches, he will become the owner of a very special record.
Even by his standards, Robin Van Persie is having a special season. In 17 matches to date in the Premier League, the Dutchman has struck 16 times. Arsenal has garnered a large chunk of their points to date thanks to winning goals of amazing quality scored by none other than their captain.

Alan Shearer scored 36 goals in one year in the Premier League. He holds the record for the most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year. Van Persie has scored 34 goals this year. He could be the owner of this record at the end of the year. He is currently the leading scorer in the Premier League.

In the past 10 seasons, an Arsenal player has won the Premier League Golden Boot four times. Thierry Henry won the award all four times. On two of those occasions, he also won the European Golden Boot. This season, the race is led by an Arsenal player as well- Van Persie. Trailing Van Persie is Newcastle forward Demba Ba on 14 goals.

Ba has proven to be an incredible signing following his transfer from West Ham United in the summer. Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney have each scored 13 times. Two other players have scored in double digits: Edin Dzeko and Yakubu. Both have 10 goals to their name. Dzeko started the season on fire but has since slowed down.

In the past 10 seasons, only one player has exceeded the 30 goal mark. Cristiano Ronaldo achieved this feat when he won the award in 2008. He scored 31 goals in 34 matches and as expected, he won the European Golden boot as well. One other player reached the 30-goal mark. Henry achieved the feat with the ‘Invincibles’ to win the award in 2004.

At the rate at which Van Persie is scoring, he is set to eclipse the 30-goal mark and even out-do the benchmark set by Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole. Cole and Shearer scored 34 goals in a single season. However, when one talks about Van Persie, one must talk about injuries. Van Persie rarely features for a complete season. Last year, he missed almost the entirety of the first half of the season and yet managed 18 goals in 25 appearances in the Premier League.

Van Persie is a striker who has it all- a lethal left foot, magnificent vision, good passing ability and the ability to be at the right place at the right time. He was a winger when Arsene Wenger initially purchased him. Wenger brought this special Dutchman to North London in order to replace club legend Dennis Bergkamp.

Wenger as a result describes Van Persie as ‘Bergkamp with goals.’ The boss himself is amazed at just how much the Dutchman has matured. On the pitch, he is the leader of Arsenal- he leads by example. Van Persie has scored 49% of Arsenal’s goals this season. Arsenal has often been criticized due to their over-reliance on Van Persie. They have been called a ‘one-man team’.

The fans and Van Persie won’t really pay heed to these comments as long as the Dutch-man is fit. Also, Van Persie will have an added motivation to score tomorrow. A win over Wolves will see Arsenal end the week in the top four where they want to be.
