At Old Trafford, Manchester United are poised to halt Wigan Athletic’s impressive 3-game unbeaten run. The Latics claimed a 2-1 victory away to West Bromwich Albion on December 10. They pursued this result with a dramatic 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea before avoiding defeat against Liverpool in a goalless match.
Second-placed Manchester United are fresh from a 5-0 demolition of Fulham. The Red Devils are poised to bag their fifth win on the trot in the English Premier League.
As Manchester United will be playing Wigan, local rivals Manchester City will be away to tenth-placed West Bromwich. One point will be enough for the Citizens to maintain the top spot in the league, but Roberto Mancini and his men are eying maximum points.
The spotlight will be on newly-crowned CAF African Player of the Year Yaya Toure. West Brom may also struggle to maintain the likes of Sergio Aguero. The Argentine striker is second behind Robin Van Persie with 13 goals in the top scorers chart.
In the highlight of them all, Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers will clash at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish’s side lost ground last weekend as they dropped two points away to Wigan Athletic.
Liverpool do not want to be further distracted by the Luis Suarez case. On Monday afternoon, the Merseyside Reds will have 90 minutes to try and leapfrog Arsenal in fifth place, at least temporarily.
