Xabi Alonso, who won’t feature against Sporting Gijon this Saturday due to suspension, refuses to get carried away by the excitement surrounding El Clasico. The former Liverpool midfielder told Realmadrid.com:

“Our manager will decide what to do in the Clasico and he'll prepare the match deeming what's best for the team on the day.

“We're only thinking about our match on Saturday in Gijon. We'll then play in Amsterdam and, finally, in the Clasico.”

Iker Casillas also joined Xabi Alonso’s call to take things step by step. The goalkeeper is having a great season.

He’s managed quite a few clean sheets in all competitions thus far despite conceding 10 goals in 13 La Liga matches. Remarkably, Casillas has not been beaten a single time in the UEFA Champions League.

However, he’s suffered humiliation too many times in the last years during El Clasico. Succeeding in containing the likes of Lionel Messi and company on December 10 would really boost Real Madrid’s chances of claiming the 2011/12 La Liga title.

“We're doing a great job and must continue to do so,” Casillas reportedly told the club’s official website.

“We have great objectives, but we must focus on short-term goals and on one game at a time.”

This weekend, Real Madrid will face Sporting Gijon at El Molinon. Los Blancos have clinched 16 points from a possible 21 away from the Santiago Bernabeu this season. Sporting Gijon, meanwhile, seat in the relegation zone as an upset of Real Madrid is what is on their minds…
