Brazil will hope to retain top spot in as they take on Ecuador for their fifth World Cup 2022 qualifying match on Friday, June 4th.

Preview: Brazil vs Ecuador

Brazil will be hoping to maintain their perfect winning record as they prepare to take on Ecuador, but Tite's squad will also be wary of their free-scoring visitors. Both teams come into this match in very strong form. The Selecao have won all four of their World Cup 2022 qualifying matches and have netted 12 times in the process, and are the only team to boast a 100 percent winning record after four games. This has helped them to remain clear of the chasing pack, albeit Argentina could've jumped into top spot if they had beaten Chile as their game took place a day before this one. However, they failed to do so, and now Brazil could extend their lead to four points with a win here.

This will be Brazil's first match in over six months, and they will be hoping to maintain their excellent home record that has seen them go seven World Cup qualifying games sans conceding a goal. Brazil are also unbeaten in their last nine clashes against Ecuador.

However, with Ecuador in a purple patch of form in front of goal, this could truly be put to the test. La Tri have netted 13 times so far, with six of those goals coming during their demolition of Colombia last November. After losing 1-0 to Argentina, Gustavo Alfaro's men picked up three wins in entertaining clashes with Uruguay (4-2), Bolivia (3-2), and Colombia, so they definitely will be hoping to cause Brazil plenty of problems in Friday's clash.

Ecuador, who last featured at a World Cup in 2014, currently sit in third spot, so on paper, things are looking good. That being said, they will be looking to avoid a repeat of their terrible 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, which saw them start out by winning their first four games, only to go on to win just two of their next 14 ties and end up failing to qualify entirely. They haven't beaten Brazil since 2004, so will be facing an uphill battle against history, but anything can certainly happen when the two sides meet on Friday evening.
