Whenever these two Merseyside neighbors meet, a weight of hype, emotion and history always engulfs the media buildup.

Here we look back at five memorable derbies played between Everton and Liverpool.

5. KING’S CORONATION – EVERTON 1 – 0 LIVERPOOL, 28 October 1978.

Everton played host to Liverpool and were desperate to end a seven year winless run against the red half of Merseyside.

London-born midfielder Andy King fired home a rocket from outside of the area to spark rapturous celebrations among the vast majority of the 53,131 crowd.

Liverpool would go on to win the league title that season, but for one day Everton had the bragging rights in the city of Liverpool.

4. RUSH HOUR – EVERTON 0-5 LIVERPOOL, 6 November 1982.

This was a day when Goodison Park would be haunted by a former ally. As a young boy, Ian Rush would cheer on Everton from the Goodison terraces.

On this day, as a grown man, Rush would cause anguish to those same supporters. Current Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was in a Liverpool team that put Everton to the sword in a devastating 5-0 win.

Welsh striker Rush netted four of the goals, while defender Mark Lawrenson also found the net during a miserable day for the Blues.

3. REDS FEEL THE SHARP END – LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON, 20 October, 1984.

The season of 1984/1985 was arguably the greatest in the history of Everton Football Club, and this win at Anfield caused as much joy among the fans as any game.

The game was settled when Peter Reid played a long ball forward, and Graeme Sharp dribbled past Mark Lawrenson and fired home a rocket of a finish. The goal sparked a wild pitch invasion by celebrating Everton fans, and would go on to win the BBC Goal of the Season Award.

Everton would go on to win the league title, finishing 13 points ahead of second placed Liverpool. The Blues would also win the European Cup Winners Cup in the same season.

2. DOUBLE JOY FOR THE REDS – LIVERPOOL 3-1 EVERTON, 10 May 1986.

The 1986 FA Cup Final was played shortly after Liverpool had won the league title by a slender two-point margin over Everton.

England legend Gary Lineker fired Everton in front early, before Jan Molby teed up Ian Rush to equalize.

Australian midfielder Craig Johnston put Liverpool in front, before Rush added a third to seal the league and cup double for Kenny Dalglish in his first season as player-manager.

1. LIVERPOOL UNITED – LIVERPOOL 3-2 EVERTON (AET), 20 May, 1989.

For the 1989 FA Cup Final the entire city of Liverpool was united. During Liverpool’s semi-final victory over Nottingham Forest, 96 fans were killed in ‘The Hillsborough Disaster,’ a human tragedy that would change the face of English football forever.

John Aldridge gave Liverpool an early lead in the game, only for Stuart McCall to force extra time with an 89th minute equalizer.

Ian Rush gave Liverpool a 95th minute lead, before McCall leveled matters seven minutes later. Parity would not last long, as a 104th minute strike from Rush won Liverpool the FA Cup, and sparked very emotional celebrations.

The Everton fans stayed to applaud Liverpool lift the trophy, and for at least one day these teams were not bitter rivals at all.
