Everton vs Liverpool kicks-off Saturday’s great English Premier League show

Angela Asante, September 30 2011,
Where else will English Premier League fans start their Saturday than at Goodison Park? Everton vs Liverpool has been scheduled for a mouth-watering lunch time kick-off.

Liverpool's match away to Everton is the highlight of the matches in Saturday 1, October.

Fortunately for the Reds, they’ve returned to normal form in time for Saturday’s Merseyside derby. Kenny Dalglish’s revolution suffered a big blow in September when Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur forced Liverpool to accept two defeats on the trot.

But last weekend, wicked goals from Charlie Adam and Luis Suarez against Wolverhampton Wanderers brought Liverpool back in business. Just as match-day 7 is about to unfold in the English Premier League, the Merseyside Reds can look upon themselves with quite enough confidence.

They have 10 points and they seat 6 places above local rivals Everton. Note, however, that the latter have a game in hand.

Interestingly, Liverpool have not won in 180 minutes away from Anfield in the Premier League. The Toffees, meanwhile, are unbeaten at Goodison Park since September 10. They’ve also won 3 of their last 4 matches in all competitions. So what will Saturday’s Merseyside derby produce?

Almost 15 minutes after the referee’s final whistle will blow up at Everton, 5 games will get underway in different locations. Eight-placed Aston Villa will host Wigan Athletic.

We will see if the Latics can bounce back from their narrow defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. Aston Villa will also be out to prove that they have recovered from their unfortunate 1-1 draw away to Queens Park Rangers in which defender Richard Dunne scored a 90 minutes own goal whereas 6 of his team mates entered into the referee’s book.

At Ewood Park, Manchester City’s task will be to pull out yet another great result to maintain the pace with Manchester United at the top of the table in the English Premier League.

Roberto Mancini will hope to get his men fired up for the match against Blackburn Rovers following the eruption of the Carlos Tevez case during the course of the week. Blackburn recently lost 3-1 to Newcastle United but no-one knows whether they’ll stun Man City as they stunned Arsenal in mid-September.

In another great fixture, Manchester United will be at home to Norwich City. Don’t rule out the underdogs just yet because they are fresh from back to back wins against Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland respectively. Currently, Norwich City seat in the top half of the table with 8 points.

After conceding 3 goals in midweek, will Manchester United’s midfield and defense pay their debt to the demanding Alex Ferguson?

There will be no evening time kick-off on Saturday, October 1. Sunderland vs West Bromwich and Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Newcastle United will be part of the afternoon fixtures.
