Competition for the gloves at Manchester United doesn’t exist between David de Gea and Anders Lindegaard. It all has to do with the fatigue factor, Ferguson insists.
David de Gea didn’t represent Manchester United on Wednesday night as the Red Devils took on Portuguese giants Benfica in Lisbon. Anders Lindegaard was instead giving the chance to complete his UEFA Champions League debut. As quoted on Manchester United’s official website, Lindegaard reminded the public that his presence at the club was meant to be felt.

“I have said one thousand times before that I am not here to pick my nose. Although I came from a small team in Norway called Aalesunds, I am here because I want to play, not because I want to sit on the bench,” the goalkeeper declared.

Anders Lindegaard repeated that his intention of joining Manchester United was to have the opportunity to play in big matches such as Wednesday night’s European fixture against Benfica. Despite conceding one goal in Lisbon, Anders displayed a great performance overall. At several occasions, the goalie produced crucial saves which spared the Red Devils from a prospective upset.

With his proven talent, Anders Lindegaard seems to have transformed into David de Gea’s great rival. However, Alex Ferguson insists that the goalkeeping position at Manchester United has nothing to do with competition but simple squad choices based on fatigue. Last night, Fergie explained things when Kenny Dalglish’s daughter and ITV interviewer Kelly Cates quizzed him over this topic.

“Not at all,” Ferguson stated as he refuted the idea of struggling to choose between Anders Lindegaard and ex-Atletcio Madrid star David de Gea. Despite the latter’s shaky performances, Fergie confirmed the following as he continued:

“David de Gea will play on Sunday [against Chelsea]. That’s the understanding we had before the game and it doesn’t change.

“I don’t know why you ask these questions. You are just looking for stupid little things. Anyway...”

The Manchester United coach, who praised Anders Lindegaard’s performance against Benfica, claimed that both Anders and David represented two great talented stars. Ferguson explained his idea of sharing duties by stating:

“There are opportunities to spread that load because, coming over to the English game, it’s such a competitive intense league for a young keeper.

“There will come a time when I need to give him [De Gea] a break. This was a good moment, because he had a fantastic game on Saturday, so this was a nice time to give him a break.”

Anders Lindegaard has been tipped to return to action against Leeds United in the Carling Cup next week. Will Alex Ferguson be deceived by his plan of dropping the impressive Anders for David against Chelsea?
