Arsenal vs. Liverpool is the big fixture that everyone is looking forward to this weekend.
Arsenal-Liverpool fixtures are mostly intense affairs. Rarely have these two sides produced a match which a fan wants to forget. However, the last time that a side came out victorious in this fixture dates back to the 2009-2010 season. Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-1 then.

The next match between these sides saw Andrei Arshavin run Liverpool ragged. He put four past them. Liverpool also scored four times. The match ended in a 4-4 draw. The latest fixture between them saw Arsenal dominate and take a much deserved lead when Robin Van Persie scored from the penalty spot. Dirk Kuyt however equalized only moments later with another penalty.

Arsenal and Liverpool frustrated their fans on the opening day of the Premier League. Arsenal went to Newcastle and picked up a 0-0 draw, when in reality, they had chances to win the game. Joey Barton and Gervinho got into a brawl towards the end causing Arsenal to lose Gervinho to a red card. He is thus suspended for the weekend.

Alex Song has been given a three match ban by the English FA for his foul on Barton and he has accepted it. Alex Song was one of Arsenal’s most important players, especially defensively, last season and thus will be sorely missed.

Kieran Gibbs and Johan Djourou were both injured in midweek European action. Thus, Carl Jenkinson is perhaps going to start this match. Emmanuel Frimpong looks to be the most likely candidate to replace Song.

Arsenal’s defence in midweek was run ragged by Udinese. The Italians failed to take their chances. Arsenal just hung on for dear life. However, what must be said is that Arsenal hasn’t yet conceded a goal in the two matches they have played this season. Liverpool will test their defence considering that they have the likes of Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam starring for them.

Arsene Wenger has made a very bold decision for this match- he has gone ahead and placed Samir Nasri in the squad. Nasri’s transfer to Manchester City is yet to come through. This might be the last time that he plays in an Arsenal shirt. The Gunners’ fans voiced their frustrations at Nasri last week. Considering this match will be played at the Emirates, Nasri might have to endure more sordid remarks from the fans.

Liverpool’s Suarez missed a penalty last week but made up for it by heading in their
goal in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland. Liverpool ended the season on a high and despite their opening day jitters, should provide a much more encouraging display on Saturday.

If both teams get going, the match should be a brilliant one. However, with Arsenal losing two of their important defenders, one cannot see them winning this match.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-2 Liverpool
