Is Andre Villas-Boas’ Delight At Being Chelsea’s New Coach Premature?
Chelsea’s new boss, Andre Villas-Boas, is relishing the challenge of leaving treble champions Porto to manage Roman Abramovic’s hungry Blues. But will he, sooner or later, have regrets?

Chelsea fans are hoping to see Andre Villas-Boas in this excited mood very often.
“This job is all I ever wanted,” said Andre Villas-Boas as he reflected on his position as Chelsea’s new manager. And while this statement may not go down well at all with FC Porto fans, it may also have Chelsea followers pondering. What is the level of ignorance or of confidence in Villas-Boas’ strong declaration?
This job is all I ever wanted… We heard similar words from debut flop Fernando Torres back in February following his switch from Anfield to Stamford Bridge where blue is the color. The rest of Torres’ story at Chelsea so far, everyone knows it.
Only opinions may differ. Either way, the general public admits that the Spaniard’s first year with the Blues can be likened to a nightmare. It is this type of fiasco that Andre Villas-Boas better not suffer.
At Chelsea, the secret for coaches to survive is to quench the immeasurable thirst for titles of owner Roman Abramovic. Carlo Ancelotti dramatically failed to lead the Blues anywhere last season. Inevitably, the Italian didn’t keep his job; this job that is now Andre’s… and that used to be Mentor Mourinho’s too.
Incredibly, Andre Villas-Boas seems to be following in Jose Mourinho’s footsteps. Like the “Special One”, “mini-Mourinho” has left Porto after clinching great success—the treble, actually.
For many people who have tried their luck at predicting, the similarities between Mourinho and Villas-Boas’ successful history are enough to all but confirm the following: Andre will enjoy a great spell at the Bridge. But ex-Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins remains curious about the 33-year-old’s future at Chelsea as The Sun could quote him as saying:
“He [Andre Villas-Boas] is a young man who has done exceptionally well [in his career thus far]. But it is a massive test coming in at Chelsea as they have big players and big personalities in there as well.
“Has he worked with players of the experience, quality and personality of some of the guys there at Stamford Bridge? It will be interesting to see how he handles it. If he can, and I believe he is a decent guy, I don't see him having a problem.”
Chelsea supporters are also hoping that the Portuguese will be comfortable enough at the Bridge, just as much as the English language poses no communication problem to Andre Villas-Boas. And yes, some people are hoping, but hoping with doubts—something to which Andre replied with a question in an interview with The Sun:
“I accept people may view it as a gamble to employ someone so young, but if I didn’t believe I could succeed, what is the point?”
