It contains the host nation, Germany. Die Nationalelf is of course the most successful nation in Women’s Football—having won the 2 last editions of the World Cup convincingly. The Germans will commence the defense of their title against Canada on June 26.
Despite carrying a poor World Cup history, 2010 Women’s Gold Cup titleholders Canada will be looking to upset Germany. Note that Canada have been granted the right to host the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In Nigeria, Group A features the 8-time CAF Women’s Championship winners. But Nigeria have a point to prove on the international stage.
The best they managed in the 5 Women’s World Cup that ever took place is a quarter-final finish (in 1999). Nigeria have been disqualified from the first round in the last 2 tournaments. Will they find better luck this time?
And to round up Group A, there is France. Highly ranked in FIFA’s chart, Les Bleues have an obligation to perform this summer. It will be France’s second World Cup only. In 2003, they went no further than Round 1 while they missed out on China 2007. Perhaps past failures will serve as a great experience for Les Bleues this year…
