English champions Chelsea FC Women will host Spanish giant Atletico Madrid Femenino at Kingsmeadow for their UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 16 first leg on Wednesday, March 3, at 2 p.m. ET.

The UEFA Women’s Champions League returns on Wednesday with round of 16 action, including the much-anticipated clash between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.

UEFA Women’s Champions League Chelsea vs. Atletico Madrid preview

Hosts Chelsea are in the midst of a race for the FA Women’s Super League title with Manchester City, who are also in the round of 16 of the Women’s Champions League and play against Fiorentina earlier on Wednesday. The Blues are first in the league by two points with 38 points after 12 wins, one loss and two draws. The London side has shown up big time when facing tough opposition in the FA WSL, taking down Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United at least once so far in the 2020-21 campaign.

Manager Emma Hayes’ Blues took down UEFA Women’s Champions League debutants Benfica with an aggregate score of 8-0 over two legs in the round of 32 to get to the round of 16.

Chelsea is looking to avenge their 2018-19 UWCL campaign – the last time they participated in the competition – that saw them reach the semifinals only to lose to eventual winners Olympique Lyonnais 3-2 over two legs.

Wednesday will prove to be a challenge for Hayes and her players, who arrive in fine form. Chelsea has won 18, lost two and drawn two games in all competitions since the FA WSL season kicked off on Sept. 6, 2020. Forwards Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby share the second spot in the WSL goalscoring charts with 11 goals. Forwards Bethany England, Erin Cuthbert, Kerr and Kirby have a combined 19 assists so far in the competition.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid finds themselves in a tough position in the Spanish Liga Iberdrola. Las Colchoneras find themselves pretty much out of the title race with 38 points behind Barcelona – 51 points with three games in hand – and Levante – 44 points. Two losses against Santa Teresa and Levante and a draw to Granadilla Tenerife in their last five league matches dismantled all hopes to overtake Barcelona and claim the title.

Despite the poor run of form in league play, new manager Jose Luis Sanchez Vera managed to lead Atletico Madrid to a Supercopa de Espana Femenina win in January after defeating Barcelona in the semifinals and Levante in the final.

Las Rojiblancas are looking to improve last season’s Champions League finish that saw them lose to Barcelona 1-0 in a one-legged quarterfinal. So far in this season’s efforts, Atletico Madrid defeated Swiss side Servette 9-2 over a home and away leg.
