Why Manchester United vs Chelsea Is The Blues’ Champions League Final
Suddenly, Chelsea are back in contention for the EPL title! Live Soccer TV explains why Carlo Ancelotti was right to brand Manchester United vs Chelsea as the Blues’ Champions League final.

Frank Lampard scored a controversial winner the last time Chelsea met Manchester United in the English Premier League.
All the way back in November, December or even January, how many football fans and pundits had tipped Sunday’s Manchester United vs Chelsea encounter to stand as a title decider between the Blues and the Red Devils? When Chelsea dropped down onto 5th in the league standings, who thought that they’d be just 3 points behind Manchester United in May?
It’s a miracle for the Blues to be in the position in which they currently are—with the English Premier League trophy not so distant from their reach now. But Manchester United may blame themselves for that. The Red Devils do have a strong record at Old Trafford but their form away from home has prevented them from wrapping up the title way before Sunday’s showdown against Chelsea.
As if Manchester United were waiting Chelsea to join them on a date, they stumbled to so many lost points. Fulham, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Arsenal and even Wolverhampton Wanderers are teams that have succeeded in embarrassing the Red Devils whereas Chelsea were also having their demons to cast.
Months ago, the general prediction was that Chelsea would be fighting for a top 4 finish. That seemed reasonable—looking at the string of bad results to which they succumbed. Sunderland travelled to Stamford Bridge and stunned them 3-0. Arsenal made fun of the Blues at the Emirates with a 3-1 win. Wolves also had their share of the cake by wounding Chelsea with a 1-0 score line on January 5.
Liverpool also replicated Wolves’ feat a month later with the same result. But then, enough was enough for the defending English Premier League champions. Their defeat against the Merseyside Reds actually marked their last till now.
And the Blues know that holding on to their unbeaten run, which started from February 6, could very well lead them to retaining their domestic crown. Coach Carlo Ancelotti couldn’t explain his opinion better than that, as the press could hear during a press conference on Friday:
“For us, it’s like a final. We wanted to play in the final of the Champions League [and failed to do so]. But we have to be happy to play this different kind of final [which is Manchester United vs Chelsea in the league].
“We can compare it to a final. We have to prepare for this game like it is a final.”
“You thought that this season was no good [after a series of poor results at some point] and now you have this opportunity [of winning the English Premier League title].”
Let’s see if Chelsea will make Manchester United regret their many lost opportunities to win the league by now.
