Spurs’ Costly Points Dropped Ahead Of Chelsea vs Tottenham HotspurSaturday, April 23—Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermaine Defoe thought they had clinched Tottenham Hotspur’s 2nd victory in 7 English Premier League matches, but they actually thought wrong. A wonderful 81st minute strike by West Bromwich Albion’s Simon Cox forced the Lilywhites to accept their 7th draw in 12 Premiership encounters.
In truth, did Cox’s 20-yard stunner kill Spurs’ UEFA Champions League aspirations for good? Should the Londoners abandon their dream of playing alongside Europe’s elite clubs for another year in succession? Nothing is over until it’s over and simple calculations prove that there is still a chance for Spurs to grab the all-important 4th place finish at the end of this season’s English Premier League campaign.
Optimistic Tottenham Hotspur supporters would prefer to side with the “gutted” Michael Dawson. The latter poured out his expectations and emotions in an interview with ESPN Soccernet on Tuesday—following his side’s disappointing draw against West Bromwich and ahead of this weekend’s crucial Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur match.
“We want to be in there [in the UEFA Champions League] again next season,” Dawson stated.
“We qualified for it last year and this is our aim this year.
“It will be hard, but we will not give up. There’s still a long way to go in the chase [for a 4th place finish] and we have to keep fighting until the end.
“We were gutted on Saturday; we dropped 2 points, but we have to pick ourselves up and concentrate on the massive game we have against Chelsea [on Saturday].
“We haven’t won there [at Stamford Bridge] for a long time but hopefully we can put things right. They will still think that they are in the [English Premier League] title race.
“They will want to win every game to try and win the league, but it does no good looking at everyone else. It is down to our form and hopefully we will get a result.
“We have some big games coming up. We go to [Manchester] City [on May 10] and it may come down to that like it did last year, but Liverpool are on a great run too. They are only 3 points behind us now.”
It looks like Michael Dawson is totally aware about Tottenham Hotspur’s delicate condition; the defender is surely well positioned to know that. Either way, Spurs’ challenge is an enormous one as the English Premier League’s table standings reveal it. As it shows on Live Soccer TV, Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur has only got bigger because of each team's recent runs:

The 4th place battle for Tottenham Hotspur has come down to a competition involving Manchester City and Liverpool. The Sky Blues now seem to be favourites with a 5-point advantage over Spurs but Tottenham could have the last word by winning their 5 remaining matches—3 of which will see them paired against Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool respectively.
However, what are the Lilywhites’ chances of clinching 15 crucial points knowing that they’ve managed to win only 22 points out of a possible 42 since 2011? Their recent unconvincing form has also seen them clinch only 8 out of 21 points.
Woeful statistics there, from a Spurs fan’s point of view and one may be tempted to ask this question: With Chelsea and Manchester City around, should Spurs give up on securing a 4th place finish?
