Preview: Juventus vs Genoa

After closing the gap on league leaders AC Milan and Inter thanks to a well-earned 3-1 win over Sassuolo, Juventus will now turn their attention towards taking care of business in the Coppa Italia. The Bianconeri will be taking on Genoa in the round of 16, and despite having struggles with consistency at times this season, the Turin giants will nonetheless fancy their chances at progressing.

The win was exactly the tonic for Andrea Pirlo's side, who headed into the Christmas break having suffered an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Fiorentina. Last weekend's win marks a third straight victory for the reigning champions and that includes a vital 3-1 win over AC Milan. Still, Juventus have quite a bit of ground to make up as they still sit seven points behind the league leaders, but their win prevented the Rossoneri from potentially moving 10 points clear.

Certainly, seven points is still a large gap, but for now, Pirlo will hope that this uptick in form will become par for the course and not just a brief spell of good fortune. Fortunately for Juventus, who are seeking their 14th Coppa Italia, they have an excellent historical record against Genoa; indeed, one would have to go all the way back to April 1939 to find the last (and only) time the Grifone have won in this contest.

The two sides couldn't have any more contrasting fortunes as they prepare to square off at the Allianz Stadium on Wednesday evening. Juventus presently sit in fourth and are chasing a tenth straight Scudetto. By contrast, Genoa find themselves hovering precariously in 17th place, just two points above the drop zone. Although they battled to a crucial 2-0 win against Bologna, Davide Ballardini's men aren't out of trouble just yet and very well could find themselves back into the red zone should they fail to pick up points from their next matches.

All in all, Genoa will be naturally facing an uphill battle in this match: the visitors not only haven't beaten Juventus since 1939 but also they haven't won in Turin in 15 prior visits across all competitions. That's not likely to change despite Juve missing quite a few key players due to COVID-19 and injuries, as Pirlo still has solid options at his disposal for his starting XI.

Team news: Juventus vs Genoa

Juventus: Pirlo will have to deal with a growing absentee list ahead of this match. Juan Cuadrado, Alex Sandro and Matthijs de Ligt are all out due to COVID-19. And his injury list has gotten a bit longer, with Paulo Dybala and Weston McKennie now joining Alvaro Morata on the sidelines. The 2006 World Cup winner will be hoping that Federico Chiesa can shake off a knock to feature, as the ex-Fiorentina man has been in good form lately.

Genoa: As for the visitors, veteran striker Goran Pandev is likely to miss out, along with Luca Pellegrini.
