The two Manchester rivals will go head to head with a spot in the final of the League Cup at stake.

Match preview

Manchester United will welcome their fiercest rivals Manchester City to Old Trafford for Wednesday night's Carabao Cup clash. The two clubs will be looking to book a final date with Tottenham Hotspur who, on Tuesday, secured a 2-0 win over Brentford to confirm their place. With both sides in form, the upcoming derby should be one to be enjoyed by neutrals.

Host Manchester United go into the encounter as second favourites despite picking up a very important win in the Premier League on New Year's Day. The Red Devils defeated Aston Villa via a 2-1 scoreline to claim the maximum points that has seen them go level with leaders Liverpool. The latter and the Old Trafford outfit will be up for a classic showdown on the January 17 but that will not be until Solskjaer's side play their outstanding game against Burnley to potentially climb to the top of the table.

In terms of form, not many teams can rival the Red Devils as they are yet to taste defeat in their last 11 domestic games. In that, they have won nine times and have drawn on just two occasions. They enter Wednesday's cup game off the back of a 2-0 win over Everton in the quarter-final of the competition.

Relatively, Manchester City will approach the cup match with a 4-1 win over Arsenal in the last eight stage. The Citizens, just like their cross-town rivals are flying at the moment and will fancy their chances of progressing as they eye a sixth title in the last eight seasons. So far, the club has won the last three League Cups, and are close to going level with Liverpool's record of winning four times successively between 1981 and 1984.

The Etihad outfit are currently on an 11-game unbeaten run across all competitions. They have won eight and have drawn the remaining three matches. The upcoming meeting with Manchester United will be the club's second in the season as they pair already drew 0-0 in the Premier League back in December.

Nevertheless, the fact that Pep Guardiola's worst loss percentage in his career comes against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer raises eyebrows with the stakes even higher this time. The Spaniard, in six meetings with the Norwegian, has managed two wins, three defeats and one loss. As a result, the host will be eager to retain the narrative by denying the defending champions passage into the final.

Team news

Manchester United will be without the injured Phil Jones for the clash with Manchester City. Edinson Cavani will not be available to feature in the game as he serves a suspension. Victor Lindelof remains a doubt with the Swede yet to fully recover from a back problem.

Manchester City will miss the services of Ederson, Gabriel Jesus, Kyle Walker, Ferran Torres, Eric Garcia and Tommy Doyle through COVID-19. Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake are also expected to sit out the game with injuries.
