Firstly, Schalke are the UEFA Champions League’s surprise package this year having reached the semi-finals of the competition while humiliating defending champions Internazionale on the way. Secondly, Sir Alex Ferguson has some scores to settle against German teams. Ahead of Schalke vs Manchester United, Live Soccer TV offers you the chance to take note of interesting facts of the past.
1996/97 UEFA Champions League:
Manchester United clashed against Borussia Dortmund at the semi-finals stage. David Beckham, Butt and company couldn’t prevent the Germans of recording two 1-0 victories. The first leg was played in Germany with Tretschok stunning the Red Devils through a 76th minute strike. In the second leg, an early goal from Ricken sealed Manchester United’s downfall. It had become impossible for Fergie’s men to find at least 3 vital goals. Borussia Dortmund went on to win the UEFA Champions League title.
2000/01 UEFA Champions League:
Manchester United clashed against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the 2000/2001 UEFA Champions League campaign. They lost both legs. The first one, which was staged at Old Trafford, saw Paulo Sergio’s 86th minute goal turn the Theatre of Dreams into a theatre of nightmares for the Red Devils. The Allianz Arena proved too scary for Manchester United as Bayern Munich hit them with a 2-1 victory and a 3-1 win on aggregate. Bayern Munich went on to claim cup glory in Europe that year.
2001/02 UEFA Champions League:
Manchester United played out a disappointing 2-2 draw in England against Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals. In the second leg, Keane gave hope to the Red Devils with a 28th minute goal but Neuville got the final word as the game finished 1-1. On aggregate, Manchester United crashed out due to the away goals rule.
2009/10 UEFA Champions League:
A poor game saw Manchester United throw away a vital 1-0 lead at the Allianz Arena. The Red Devils suffered a 2-1 defeat in Germany in the end; so their 3-2 victory at Old Trafford in the return leg didn’t mean much. Manchester United exited the competition at the quarter-final stage.
Manchester United’s record against German teams in two-legged ties is woeful. It might take something special, like the miracle of the 1999 UEFA Champions League final when Man United stunned Bayern Munich, for the Red Devils to reach Wembley this season.
